It's pretty rare to see one on a gas engine rather than a diesel, simply because keeping the radiator hot when it's very cold outside is not an issue like it is with the diesels.

I've never seen one on an Av in the 9-1/2 years I've owned mine.

You could use the old fashion pizza box tucked behind the grill...... I don't think they make them bit then again I've never looked.

A winter front covers the grill in extremely cold weather so that the engine stays up to temp and also have heat in the cab. I know of one company that makes a vinyl one with snaps and another that makes aluminum inserts, I'm hoping to see pics so I can decide which one I want. Thanks for the replies. Coach.

Yep, that's the brand I have on my Jeep and my F350, I just wanted to see what they look like on the avalanche. It gets pretty cold here, -30 *F without wind chill. Coach

Yea I haven't had much luck finding pics that's why I was hoping to find a member that actually uses one. As far as what temp it's needed, well that's subjective, I put mine on when it drops down to to 10*F or less. Not everyone uses them but it definitely helps when driving down the road and it's cold out. The pizza box works but I think it looks kinda tacky. Coach

I was stationed in North Dakota for 8 yrs and trust me, you need that pizza box in front of the grille.

I had a 75 Scout II up there and the block heater went out on it. Came out the next day and the block was solid ice. Put a new block heater in and in less than 4 hours, all was good.

Actually you can use any solid grille insert. Much better than cardboard. Hehehe

Donnie, thanks for your service, my dad was a SMSGT, was also stationed at Minot back in the mid/late 60's (I was pretty young then), I was Navy. BlueDevil, sorry I'm new what does wbh mean? What brand is that insert?

WBH refers to the style of avy. The cladded has all the armor on it, the WBH (Without Body Hardware) is the one with the chrome bumpers and Silverado looking front end.

Thank you and your dad as well. I was there from 87-94. Just retired after 22 yrs in Jan 09 as a MSgt

Donnie, congrats on the retirement, my dad died in '79 while on active duty, I did 8 1/2 yrs in the Navy, was RIF'd in '95 as a Petty Officer 1st Class (E-6). My Avy is cladded, is the grill different between the two? Coach

Grills are definitely different between the 2, although they are pretty close.

The powerbar splitting the grill horizontally sits higher on the cladded AVs. The opening width I suspect is also a little different.

The naked AV's share a grill, hood, etc. with the Silverados - hence you would have a lot more choices most likely with a naked AV.
