BBB is looking to add airbags and horns to DenaliHD
« on: November 29, 2011, 09:38:27 AM »
I know I don't have Big Block anymore but this is not specific.

How can I install airbags with onboard air and horns using three same compressor and a tank?

Three compressors and one tank? What kind of horn are you looking at?

I would think you can put  a "T" in there. Might want to see about a regulator for the air going to the bags though. I don't know what kind of pressure they can handle. Richie has a set on his 2500 so I hope he'll chime in soon.

Come to think of it. Didit has both installed on his.

typo

I'm looking at the wireless control for the bags.  Thinking I wool need a bigger compressor and tank for the horns.

I've got the Airlift system on my truck. http://www.airliftcompany.com/
They sell all kinds of automated filling valves and gauges.
Mine are filled manually through a schrader valve in my back bumper.
I have a hard time spending money on something I can build, but it is a good source for ideas.
I think the maximum pressure for the bags is 100psi, so there shouldn't be a problem using a regular tank.
http://www.onboardair.com/ is another place for ideas and any parts you may want.

My current project is mounting a York 210 pump, some sort of tank and solenoids for air distribution.
I will probably use an electrical oil pressure gauge that goes to 100 psi to monitor my air pressure in the Airlift bags. I don't want to be running air lines inside the cab of the truck.

You mentioned having on board air. Those tiny compressors are not designed to pump enough air to keep up with any sort of air tool.
Airlift sells a kit to mount the York pump to the 5.3L engine, but it's in the neighborhood of $450.
Their price for a York pump is ridiculous, though it has been supposedly been modified to pump air.
The biggest problem using a York is keeping the oil in the compressor, but there are solutions. I will probably use a catch can that I can drain back into the housing every once in a while.

I do have a thread going on my attempt at mounting the York to my 2500.
Currently I'm at the stage of discovering an unusable pump, but the seller has agreed to send me another one.

Thanks for the feedback.  I may have miss spoke regarding onboard air, I meant cab controlled air, for the bags.

I guess my real question is, if I buy a bag system, can I use the same components for horns.  If not, what will I need.

Will the onboard compressor they include suffice for the horns by adding a tank?

I am thinking that I will have a separate switch to power the compressor.

My question is really geared towards having both systems working together.

Here is my assumption (though only based on logic):

The compressor will fill the tank.
The tank will then have outlets to the horn and bags.
When air is needed for the bags, the "relay" will open to allow the air to go from the tank to the bags (only turning on the compressor if needed)
When horns are called on, it will open a relay to the horns.

To utilize the airbags, the supplied system would go between the tank and the bags instead of the compressor and the bags.

Does that make sense???

One compressor, one tank. The T will be on the output of the tank. One going to the bags through a regulator and the other to the horns.  solenoids on both with the bag solenoid controlled by a pressure switch with preset on and off parameters set to the bags capacity

Wow...and this is what I heard...

 2funny

OK, I need to decide on a bag system and find some horns and a tank...  Anyone???

Letsindy started a thread on here that I did some research for horns for him. Had three sets on ebay with links. All 3 had Viar compressors which is what I have.

Another thing to consider is how to let out air from the air bags without dumping it all.
I'm not sure what the minimum for mine are, but it's around 25psi.

For the air bags I'm thinking of putting some sort of restrictor in the line.
Something like what they use on the oil feeds for some turbos so they don't blow the seals.
For the air bags you would need two solenoids. One for fill and one for drain.
It would be like filling a tire....press one switch and watch the gauge raise. If it goes too high, tap the second switch to bring the pressure where you want it.
