Got 4 12" subs But What Kinda Power do i need?
« on: July 08, 2007, 04:48:35 PM »
This is what i got so far, 4 12" Autotek Mean Machine Subs with one 1000watt amp. I'm wondering if i need more power for the subs and do i want a capacitor or just a small battery.
Any help greatly appreciated. :thumb:

I'm not familure with the specs of those subs but I would suspect that you'll want more power.  I'm running a 1000X1 MA on 2 Infinity Kappa Perfect 12's.

2011 Silverado, Ext Cab Z-71 5.3, 6L80, Airaid CAI, Magnaflow cat-back, and a little tuning by me and HPT.

Gone but not forgotten, 2002 Victory red. The quickest lifted 4x4 AV in the US in it's day.

When I had the fifteens in the old AV I had just a capacitor and ran into problems with the lights strobing with the bass when I had it really pounding and never got around to doing an extra battery. My plan, however, was to put dual batteries in the bed in marine boxes. That is how I did a friends Jeep Cherokee and another's Tahoe and it seemed to do the trick and add that cool look in the back.

oops forgot that part of the question...  :-\

I added a 1 Farad cap to mine and it made very little if any difference in my lights dimming.  A larger one might have helped more.  ???

Since then, I replaced the alternator with a "alterstart" 235 amp unit.  That fixed the problem.

What Ohm are the speakers? How many voice coils per sub? What is the RMS power output on the amp? What is the RMS power output for each of the subs? We need some more info to tell you whether or not that amp will push all 4 subs or if you need more power.

As far as a CAP or a battery, I would say run a secondary battery if room warrants. I've never had an issue with headlights dimming with 2 batteries. If you don't have room for a battery, the general rule of thumb is 1 ferad worth of CAP for every 500 watts of RMS power.
