STUCK TORSION KEYS!!! NEED HELP
« on: October 22, 2011, 10:57:57 AM »
I got a Truxxx 2-3 in. lift/leveling kit for my 2005 avalache. it has 1.25in spring spacers in the back which i already have installed and new torsion keys in the front. I started TRYING to install the new torsion keys the other night after just finishing installing new keys on my friends 92 chevy using the gear puller method for unloading the keys. Unloading the keys with the gear puller worked great on both trucks . Where we ran into troubles on the avalanche is once we got the key unloaded we could not get the torsion bar to come out of the keys and let me just say after trying just about everythig we could think of they are still SEVERElY stuck/rusted together.
If anyone has had this same problem and has ideas of what i could do any advice would be greatly appreciated. If you think its a lost cause and i should have a shop deal with it and do them for me id like to know that too.

do you know what they cut them off with ? cause i would just use an oxy torch but i dont want to mess up the torsion bars so thats probably not a good idea.

I'm not sure. I'm assuming they used a torch as I don't see how any kind of saw could get up in there let alone cut through them. Maybe they have a heavy duty plasma cutter.
On a somewhat related note, Did you jack up the front end and put jackstands under the frame to take the front load off the springs too? I just helped take some Tbars out of an 05 H2 the other day (9.5" lift going on it) and we had to beat them out with a BFH.

Kind of the same lines as OBB, was the front end jacked up? I would try WD40, spray a bunch where the bar connects to the key and drive it for a few days to see if it frees up.

PB Blaster will work even better.

Well the torsion bars are loose in the lower control arm so I don't know if jackin up the front end would do anything . The keys are just rusted to the bars so I'm gonna try everything from pb blaster to coke on the barsband if that doesn't work I'm going tonusena plasma torch to cut them off
