Dual battery mod?
« on: October 10, 2011, 09:33:44 PM »
Hay everybody! Well with the addition of all the lights I'm sure its started to take its toll on my battery and alternator so I'm looking to do the dual battery mod. The only problem is I can't find it lol. I've done the search option and haven't found anything. My laptop is sitting at the restaurant  and I haven't had a chance to get over there lately. Can somebody help me out?... I have candy!!!

You can go the expensive route and buy a premade kit from someplace like Painless or the el cheapo route like Didit and myself did. Buy the cables from a stereo shop and go to Harbor Freight and get a battery isolator that you manually turn on or off. I'll try to get pix up when I get a chance.

Ok so this is what I got so far. I'm gonna need some 4 guage maybe 0op power cables about 10-12 feet of it. A volts guage. Another battery and a battery tray. Some clips and connectors and the isolator. The ISO has to be double the output of the alternator so it doesn't blow the relay when it is switched to dual mode. the primary battery will be devoted to starting and running the truck. The secondary battery will be for my accessories. I'll have the after market volts guage hooked up to it and if I see it is  getting below 11volts I switch the ISO to dual mode and it recharges the battery to 14-16 volts and then switch it off.... Correct?

Im sorry but is "ISO" = "isolator"?  Double the output?  you mean double the voltage? or amps?  I picked up a stinger 80 Amp Isolator/Relay from a Car audio shop plus some 10 feet of 4 guage and a 60 amp AGU fuse.  I want to go the same route you're going project black out.  Just not eactly sure how to do this...  Looking for those guiding pictures haha

I still need a voltmeter though, what's yours look like btw?  Also need to get a tray and a in cab switch.

yes ISO does mean isolator. and as far as the double output i am refering to the amperage. i am running the 140amp alternator so i would need a 280 amp isolator. i havent gotten any of the materials im just making a shopping list. the ISO is gonna be the hard find here. the battery tray is gonna be easy ill just go to the local junk yards and take one off of another chevy truck... the volts guage is gonna be from glowshift.. i have used their products for all my other cars. i usally go with the tinted series they look sick and are very accurate. and im thinking the battery is gonna be one of the optima batterys....its gonna have to be a deep cycle.... i think.... any advice for others? maybe pictures if they have this mod?

You want your batteries to match so they will charge evenly. Ask the guys at the local stereo shop about it.

I just went with a Harbor Freight battery isolator. $10 for a 100 amp one. I get under the hood every now and then to flip it to charge just to keep it up there.  I'm off tomorrow and put pix of this on my todo list. If I wasn't gone from 12 - 16 hours a day for work, I'd have pix already up for you.

Ok so I'm not gonna need a 280amp ISO correct? And I was actually thinking of putting the switch inside the cab. I'm making a cool switch panel under the steering wheel and I already have the switches for the flood and spot lights wired up and the circuit breaker for the amp is already hooked up... Just needs a little more to fill up the space. :) thanks for the help mike! If this goes right ill be doing another write up for us!

Here's a few pix from my phone.  Notice the bolts on the 2nd battery.  Those also came from the stereo shop I bought the 4ga wire from.
2nd and 3rd pix shows the isolator in the off and on positions.

Last pix shows it attached at the junction box.

Ok so just to be clear. You have the second battery positive terminal  going to the  isolator and then from there to the alternator junction box and the negative  terminal going to a chassis ground... Correct?

I think I paid about $40 total for all the above parts at a dealer and that was without any discount.
