last night 1/4 mile times
« on: May 19, 2011, 02:56:43 PM »
so last night a buddy and i decided to take his 97 4.6 ford ext cab and my 07 avalanche to the local drag strip just to see what numbers they would put on the board. i was kind of impressed with my trucks time considering its completely stock. i had read that avarage times on these truck were from 16.9 to 17.1. i managed to get the best of a 16.5 @ 86mph 60'ft 2.599 manual shifting and 16.7 @ 86mph 60'ft 2.565 on D. i had other 3 runs but these were my best. i think i can do jus a bit better because when i shifted it kind of bogged down little. had a fun last night jus wanted to know what times it hits before goning fully bolt on and custom wideband tune.

Sounds like you had some fun!

I don't know about the newer trucks, but my 03 seemed to shift too soon.  Best thing about some of the handheld programmers is that you can adjust the wide open throttle shift points.  I'm hitting 2nd now around 49 mph, 3rd at 89.  Of course with a bigger cam, I've got more top end power than stock so that helps more too.

18x10 Forged Weld Wheels, BFG g-Force KDWs, JBA shorties, custom catback with FM70, Crane plug wires, Trailblazer Torque Converter, bigger cam, efans, HP Tuners custom tune, WAAG stuff, mildly boosted with Vortech Supercharger.......

well compared to my 06 5.3 crew cab stock yeah i agree seemed to shift real soon compared to the avalanche. then i went HPtune on the 06 and WOW real nice shifts it was tune mostly for 30 rolls so the shifts was like at 105 2nd to 3rd with 342 gears. on the 06 it was a best of 15.9 tuned, not impressed at all.  i had my 08 5.3 single cab HPtunned wideband and u can realy tell the diffrence in the in the shifts points aswell. i guess ill have to wait and see what numbers the avalanche is going to make with the tune.

It's been a while since I've seen a 1/4 mile - last couple of times have been a 1/8.

My best 1/4 was with my oldest daughter behind the wheel - my extra 100 pounds made a measurable difference.  She did a 15.9.  At the time my mods were rather modest if memory is correct:  Hypertech tune with adjusted shift points, flowmaster 70 series muffler, K&N drop-in factory replacement filter, hole cut in the bottom of the stock airbox, synthetic oil, 55ix plugs, 50 ohm performance wires, I think that's about it.  I may have had the shorty headers installed at that time but its been over 5 years.  I may have had the 160 degree thermostat in then but again, it was a long time ago.

Today I'm also running a cam, 0.551 lift, 216/224 duration @ 0.050, custom ram air intake, trailblazer higher stall converter, underdrive pulleys, an electric fan, injectors out of an 8.1 and my own HPTuners tune.  When I did my last drag strip, (1/8), I was also running a transmission with a 2nd gear super-hold servo, but didn't have the injectors.  I ran a 10.3 - KY Bob ran an 8.9 with the supercharger that is now in my garage, plus nitrous.

For an engine with 231,000 miles, mine is still running pretty strong.  At about 205,000 it busted the output shaft of my rebuilt transmission with a 3200 stall converter due in part to hitting 2nd too hard.

Edit - by the way, the pic in my sig is at the 1/4 track where we ran the Beech Grove strip during a large gtg in Bowling Green, KY.  I'm not sure who is behind the wheel in the pic at the starting line, but I took the picture of my daughter holding her time slip after one of her runs.

nice set-up. what CAI would you recomend what are the avais here using? im also thinking about a cam and stall. i was told that a ZO6 cam and a trailblaizer stall would be good for the truck. but im not sure, i guess a little cam is ok for a daily driver dont know if there would be any diffrence.
oh and when is your supercharger going in?

My cam is a Crane cam, and it is bigger than the Z06 cam.  If I were to do it again, I'd go a bit bigger not smaller, even if I had a stock torque converter, which I think was what I had when the cam went in - its been several years.  This truck is my daily driver, but it hasn't towed anything for many years.  We put a cam in another member's truck (I can remember his real name but not his online name at the moment - sorry Brian) back in the fall, and he's very happy with it when towing.  His cam is a little smaller than mine.

I was running a Double D 3200 stall converter until I broke the tranny back in November.  It was very daily driver friendly as well, but may not be the best if you tow a lot and/or pull heavy loads.

I don't think there's a consensus here on what is "the best" cold air intake.  Before doing my ram air setup, I had replaced the stock tube with an AIRAID tube and was still using the stock airbox.  When I bought the tube, AIRAID was the only company as far as I could tell that would sell the tube separate from the big cone filter to replace the airbox.

I'm not sure when I will get around to putting the supercharger on.  Too many other things on my plate at the moment.

Feelin the love Greg!!   :verymad:

We put a Lingenfelter GT2-3 cam and Z06 springs in mine.  I have a Yank TT2600 stall and a K&N 70 Series high flow intake.  I got a Black Bear tune and am very satisfied with the outcome!!

Cam Number Duration @ .050  Valve Lift   Rocker Arm Centerline GT-1
LS1-GT1 218 / 229 .561" / .561" 1.7 ratio 113

Cam Number Duration @ .050  Valve Lift   Rocker Arm Centerline GT2-3
LS1-GT2-3 207 / 220 .571" / .578" 1.7 ratio 118.5

Here are the specs for the two cams.  M1 or MBT or someone else might chime in to give you the difference in terms better than I could.

The GT2-3 is a great cam for SC or NA.  It was right on the line for me to have the performance gain and still be a good towing application.  I talked to Justin at Black Bear and what I have is what he suggested.  Great advise because I like what I have running it or towing with it.

Personally, with a naturally aspirated daily driver I'd stick with the GT2-3. It remains a great, proven choice if you decide to go with forced induction later.

Likewise, for a naturally aspirated vehicle, M1 and I differ a little bit on opinions on a cam. I believe the GT1 would shift and extend the power considerably higher in the rpm range, which is not good if you keep the stock converter. It would tend to make the off-the-line acceleration feel more sluggish. You would also have to go to dual springs for it.

M1's cam and mine are the same; 216/224-0.551/0.551-115. To me this is about an ideal compromise, especially when you add a 2600-3000 stall converter. It keeps the torque down low, which is in reality what most of us that drive a truck are looking for and what we need to get a heavy-a$$ed truck like the Avalanche moving. It also extends the rpm range considerably higher than the 5500 rpm where the stock cam runs out of steam. I believe I'm currently shifting at 6300 rpm and the cam is still pulling like a raped ape. I don't want to go higher than this with the stock heads.

Last comment: you've got the right idea - do lots of research and ultimately make your mind up based on an informed decision.

Some of the difference in opinion is likely due in part to my main interest in adding power is passing on 2-lane highways, not taking off from a dead stop.

2-lane highway, what's that?  :fast:  Fortunately I don't have to drive too many of those any more. There's about a 20 mile stretch left between home and the farm and it's supposed to be finished to 4-lane by the end of this summer. That's the extent of any 2-lanes that I drive on a regular basis, other than the 6 miles off highway 36 to the turnoff to the farm.
