16" wheels on my avy
« on: May 12, 2011, 08:01:16 AM »
Hello!  i was thinking...265/70r17 tires are expensive (most $150 and up for good quality), plus, i recently found out that painting my factory wheels myself would be dangerous because theyre alloy wheels and need to be prepped and painted a certain way, and will cost $50 more per wheel because of this.  so, after looking on craigslist, i found a guy whose selling a set of 4 american racing 6x5.5 16" wheels for $250.  also, i decided that I would go with a "tractor trailer" look, if you will, and purchase 235/85r16 tires to wrap them in.  i was either going to go with a yokohama geolandar a/t-s or a definity dakota m/t tire, both load range e.  my question is, would this set up be okay to have?  my tires will be an inch smaller in width, and im afraid they will look ridiculous, esp with the fender flares on the wbh avy.  could i get wheel spacers?  im sure then the problem would be, as skinny as the wheels are, the weight of the truck may push down more on the center of the truck, which could be bad.  let me know what you all think...thank you!

Jon

Those 16's you are looking at are almost an inch skinnier. I'm not sure how well that will work. The other thing is with that much sidewall you'll start to notice more "drift" from the tires. There's a link to a tire size calculator around here somewhere that will tell you the overall height of each tire size. I can't remember where it is at the moment. As long as your overall height remains really close to the stock size you won't have to worry about reprogramming the computer so the odometer and speedometer for accuracy.

Tire size calculator
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

According to this site your size are really close to one another so I don't think you'll have issues with the speedo and odometer.

Here's another tire calculator:
http://www.1010tires.com/tiresizecalculator.asp
Those skinny tires will make that Avy handle like a tugboat in forty foot waves. You can get new 17" wheels that look good for around $120 ea. and decent tires around the same amount.
265/70/17 prices

wheels around $120 from Summit Racing

You can easily get $300 bucks or more for your set of OEM wheels getting you new tires and wheels around $600 bucks total that's what I did on mine.
Bought 04 Summit White 1500 4X4 summer of 08. Mods 17X8 Black Rock Wheels, Stainless Fender Trim, Hood  Deflector, Custom 1/4 Panel Emblems, Black Billet Bowtie, Amber DRL's, 800W power inverter for portable PS3 & 13" TV, Recon Big Rig Ice LED light bars, Renegade roof light bar.

I would just get cool aftermarket 17's, but the tire i want (theres a million tires, i know) is unavailable in 265/70r17 or any similar variation to fit the wheel.

i will be getting 1/2" wheel spacers for the front to even it all up, and get a set of 2" torsion bar keys for a level ride, whether i get new wheels and tires or not.

the size was a recommendation from my g/f's brother, who had the same size on his mothers 99 suburban 2500, and it handled like a dream.  i only thot that since the avy is essentially a suburban, that it would be an easy transition.  i wouldnt sacrifice anything to get this to work, but it sounds like i might...back to the drawing board :P

If i ask around and find out its ok, because base model, and 2500 avy's, all have a 245 width tire, stock, then whats another 10mm? the size bolt on my bowtie? please, lol.

thank you!

Painting the factory rims are not that difficult. I did that on my 02 truck. I can do a write up if you want on how to prep them.

Here's the link to the pics of my old rims that I had painted. I'm in the car on my way to RI right now but as soon as I get to the hotel I'll pull out my computer and do the write up for you but this will at least show you what they looked like after I finished them. I'll link the write up to this post when I get it done.

awesome!  I will definitely paint them myself now seeing how it seems so easy!  just one question, it seems like all is riding on the adhesion promoter, any chance i can find it at an auto zone or something?  I am going satin black with the entire wheel, and use krylon fusion on the plastic cap, also satin black (entire thing).  i will post pics when i have done it.

Thank you!

I bought it at pep boys by my house so I don't think you'll have an issue with finding it at auto zone or what not. And make sure that you use wheel paint. Regular spray paint will not stick or hold up to the weather and conditions and everything your rims see. I had a friend of mine try to use reg spray paint and he wound up having to strip the paint and respray them with wheel paint.

right, of course.  I didn't know duplicolor made a wheel paint; will any wheel paint do?  i may go with a gloss black, however, i may be going with the oem 16" wheels (they look slightly similar to the 17's i have on now):

If i can find a cheap set, then i will just hold off on painting my 17's and just paint these ones.  remember, these wheels, when purchased, will be wrapped in a 235/85r16 size definity dakota m/t tire.  they will do nothing except give me more control of the road in harsh conditions (narrower tire), look freakin sweet with a massive sidewall, and, because its almost the exact same size diameter as i have now, the computer will not require an adjustment.  fuel economy will also see a small difference.  i will then follow up with a set of 2" torsion bar keys, 1/2" wheel spacers on the front, and an allignment.  i will do this when funds become available, and will share pics when done.  thank you!

LOL!!  so i asked the guy at autozone after looking back in the paint section, and not finding the right stuff, i asked him if they carried duplicolor wheel paint. he said "I didnt know duplicolor made a wheel paint"(!)  they luckily had the adhesion promoter, though only one can, then i was unsure as to what i should get, after hearing out what my g/f's brother had told me.  he said that i should use an enamel based paint to paint my wheels, because it fills in any pits the wheel may have received through the thousands of miles of travel put on them, so i held off on buying ANYTHING!!  do i use one, the other, both, or neither and just stick with the way GM made them?  im so confused!  everything was soo much easier when i was told this process would cost $40/wheel and would only take a couple of days.

The dupli color paint is enamel based its made specifically to help clean up or restore wheels. If you go to the duplicolor website and click products and look at the wheel coating section it will show you everything. Also when u start scuffing and sanding it should get rid of the pitting n the rim. My old truck had 150k+ on it when I painted the rims and I had no pitting. I would use wheel paint.
