Lug Studs.
« on: May 09, 2007, 05:52:35 PM »
Upon arrival home from the MCM G2G I opened my mailbox and found the brake caliper decals I ordered a week or so ago. ( Im thinking it sucks I didn't get to put them on prior to the event )

Tuesday I finally got around to putting them on.

Got out the new floor jack, rounded up all the necessary tools for removing the new Rimz, Breaker bar, thin wall socket, Lock adaptor, allen tool for the caps, Etc. Ya know the stuff to take um off.

Lifted the truck up a little prior to breaking the lugs loose to take some weight off the wheels.

Removed the caps on the passenger side, loosened the Rt rear studs first, then the Rt front studs,
( 5 of 6 )

Five of Six because one of them was so freakin tight it wouldn't budge.  ( even with my new breaker bar / clicker wrench )

After about 3 or 4 min. of pushing pulling on the ridiculously tight lug nut, SNAP.  Yup the stud broke off flush with the new lug nut.  ( this sucks because I put these on and I obviously cross threaded it at install. My fault, Im Retarded and don't know how to put lug nuts on )

Went on about my business and cleaned the calipers to apply the new decal, called my Bro at the dealership and ask approx. how difficult or how much to replace a wheel stud.  ( 35 min. or $45 )

Applied the decal to the front, did some minor modification to the back to remove a high edged on the caliper, applied the decal to the back, reinstalled the wheels ( minus one front lug ) and moved on to the other side.

Same process, Lifted, removed caps, broke loose back then front lugs ( same B.S. on this side, 1 of 6 was excessively tight again. )  Tried to tighten, loosen to no avail.  Then the inevitable SNAP.

I know there is NO way I cross threaded 2 of these things.  Called my Bro again and ask if there was a 2 fer special  ( Yup $85 )

Applied the decal to the front, did some minor modification to the back to remove a high edged on the caliper, applied the decal to the back, reinstalled the wheels ( minus one front lug )

Tonight the AV is going to my brothers so he can take it to work with him in the morning.  I have to replace 2 lug studs, and 2 lugs.  One on each side, both front wheels.

The best we can guess is the new lugs are / were slightly off and were not cross thread at all just a poor fit.  ( I know for a fact I hand started these myself and didn't feel any resistance out of the ordinary )  Waiting on feedback from the local Tire guy to see if "anti-sieze" should be applied or other type of lubricant to the studs on after market wheels.

The silver lining to the dark cloud is I'm glad the decals didn't show up till after the G2G or I would have broke the studs trying to put them on Friday morning.

I'll have 2 of these please.

Man, that sucks.
2011 Silverado, Ext Cab Z-71 5.3, 6L80, Airaid CAI, Magnaflow cat-back, and a little tuning by me and HPT.

Gone but not forgotten, 2002 Victory red. The quickest lifted 4x4 AV in the US in it's day.

That's kind of the story of my life. If it can break, crumble, scratch or get lost.......you know that is what happens to me.
Sorry to hear about that.
