new subwoofers messed up?
« on: February 23, 2011, 02:35:18 PM »
ill start this off by saying that i am absolutely confused and have no idea whats going on.... ok...

so i was listening to my music on maybe 1/4 volume with the new subwoofers in (4x kicker cvt6.5, kicker 750.1 amp)
all of a sudden a loud pop came from the subwoofers, and the bass decreased dramatically. i would normally think that if there was a loud pop there would be something broken and there would be no sound, however that is not the case; if you put your hand over the port you can feel a small amount of air. Two days later the bass went back to the normal level so i thought it had maybe been a random occurrence, then maybe half an hour of listening, and there was another pop and it went quieter again.

this has happened maybe four times, and now im worried to turn the radio on for fear of breaking something.
can ANYONE even guess what is wrong here???   :wtf:

the "pop" could be a couple of things.. first check the fuzes on the amp.. if thoses look good then i would start checking wires.. how do ou have your power supply running? is it under any interior trim? check where it is comming through the firewall..make sure the power wire is not stripped anywhere.. another thing check the ground...  sometimes when driving we hit potholes or just small viabrations in the chassie is enough to loosen up a bolt that we thought was tight... if everything looks good next step would be to have your amp checked.. most places that sell audio equipment have a stress tester for amps.

what guage power supply are you running? and what size is the ground wire? and you speaker wire? i have seen some insane sound system setups but the wires and cords were not big enough to supply the amp with power or a good ground and ive repaired 600$ amps all because a ground was loose

That amp puts out 300-400 Tops at 4 ohm and 12.8 volts , 750 watts at 2 ohm and 14 volts(Your truck will not give 14 volts) How do you have them wired? 2 or 4 ohm? Have the box metered you might be at lower then 2 ohms.

they are wired at 4 ohms (two subwoofers in each box, wired in series, and the boxes are in parallel at the amp output)
my wires are 4 gauge and the speaker wire is i believe 16 gauge. a
and to clarify, the pop is (from the sound) the speaker moving out once, then becoming extremely quiet, almost like i turned the gain all the way down, but they still work after the pop

Meter each sub inputs. It could also be the amp...

yea my guess is that this is an amp issue not so much as your subs...if you have an ABC warehouses in your area you can take your amp to them and they can run a stress test on it..

FINALLY figured it out
it seems that as i hit a bump (not every bump, just once in a while) the input would click from low to high, or high to low. so i just had to velcro the amp down about an inch away from where it was before, and now its working fine. thanks guys.

hm.... who wants to explain how to add a picture on a thread.
On the pix page in the gallery under the pix itself is a linking code in a box. Copy that entire code and paste it into the message body here. You'll have to scroll left to right to highlight the whole code. make sure you see the < > at both ends of the code.Below is an example of what you'll copy/paste. It will not say code above it. I used the html codes from above to show the example.
If you're still a little leary or my explanation is not very clear, go to your post where the pix now show up and hit the quote button. You'll see in the message box the code I'm referring to.
