I'm on a roll today. I added an Aux Jack to the FM side of my radio on mine.

I don't subscribe to XM and after putting an iPod adapter in Twiggy's Avy today I thought it'd be nice to use my iPhone's mp3 player in my Avy also. I've upgraded my HU a few years back to the Lux Touch screen Nav unit and added the external 6disc CD changer along with a Pac Audio adapter for my BU camera. I've just about run out of room behind my radio for adapters. I dig some digging as my motorcycle has an Aux jack for the stereo on it. I already had the cord to run from my phone to the bike radio and came up with a solution. I'm not the first person to do this mod but we don't have a write up here for it and I thought I'd share.

Radio Shack Part number 274-0246  1/8" Stereo Phone Jack



A couple feet of Cat5 I had laying around


Solder the wires on to the Jack
pin 1 Closest to the jack will SPLICE into the ground wire of the XM harness
pin 2 Going clockwise looking at the back of the jack (white/brown in the pix) will go to the RADIO SIDE of the brown/white wire in the XM harness
pin 3 opposite jack (solid brown wire in pix) will go the the brown/white wire on the XM side of the XM Harness
pin 4 inside of the back of the jack ( solid green wire in the pix) will go to the DARK green/white wire on the XM side of the XM Harness
pin 5 outside of the back of the jack (approx 7o'clock position) will go the the RADIO SIDE of the DARK green/white wire in the XM harness


A little shrink wrap and tape to keep the connections isolated


OUT TO THE AVY
open the glove box and remove all your garbage out of it. I never knew I had that many Wendy's napkins in there On the right side is a tab that you pull in and the GB will swing down out of the way exposing your XM module.




open up the tape so you have room to work on the wires.


There's two black and white wires. You want the one that is grouped with the green/white and brown/white wires
SPLICE your wire from the number1 pin to this. I used the solid blue in the CAT5
CUT your brown and DARK green wires. both will have stripes on them.


again the wire attached on pin 2 goes to the RADIO side of the brown/white wire you just cut
pin3 goes to the XM side of the brown/white wire you just cut
pin4 goes to the XM side of the DARK green/white wire you just cut
pin 5 goes to the RADIO side of the DARK green/white wire you just cut
I used scothlocks and a T tap. Others have soldered them in but my soldering skills aren't the greatest.


For the time being I just have my jack stuff up by the trim. You'll notice the switch plate where that square cubby used to be. I've got some metal to make a new plate and add a couple more switches so I'll put the jack into that once I have that completed.



Set your Radio to XM 1, plug your phone into the jack and enjoy. You'll have to turn the volume up on your phone and your HU as it loses volume going this route ( It does the same thing on my bike) You'll also have to adjust your EQ settings to get the sound as you like it. The nice thing about this mod is that jack is a bypass jack. Unplug your phone from the jack and your XM still functions as normal. For under $5 I can live with it. I can only control my music from my phone and it does not charge my phone like the adapter in wife's avy. Hers is  better all around quality and ease of use but this will do the trick for me. I can even play Pandora on mine this way as well as my favorite radio stations that have apps for the phone when I'm away from home.

Hey OBB,  my truck does in fact have the XM module, however, it is a real bitch to get to, any tips?  i dont exactly have small hands either.  the other thing was does my radio support it?  i need to attach a pic of my radio to this thread so maybe you, and others, can help me figure it out.

ill have to check, but not that i know of.  i do have a "cd/aux" button on the HU, does that actually do anything?  if it makes more sense just to get the aftermarket HU to get the aux jack then ill do it, but i just hate unsightly cable dangling about.  thank you

Keep in mind that I haven't finished that install. I still need to mount that jack in my accessory switch plate.

but also, i need to keep in mind that this works, according to the video, with your aftermarket head unit, not factory.  i am still waiting for that person to chime in and say, "ooh! iver done this with factory radio and it works!" but im not that lucky :P  i just thought, after i sent you the PM back, do i even need the antenna if i just have the module? thank you!

Mine is a factory Nav unit. I did the upgrade a few years ago.

wow!  did not know that!  talk about high rolling!    ill just not worry about doing this mod right now, although I have all the materials.  ill focus on painting my bowtie first.  also, I found a place called auto finishers llc in vestal, about 15 miles from where i live, that will put my factory color in an aerosol.  my question to them would be, is it good for plastic?

like i said, Im not going to worry about the xm aux jack mod for now.  if you find anything, let me know, please and thank you!
