D-maxalanche project
« on: February 06, 2011, 01:48:27 AM »
Well the D-maxalanche project has started.
I'm starting with a 2003 Avalanche carcass from the wife's AV rebuild. I gutted all the wiring and dash components out of it and removed the so called body from the frame. believe it or not this frame is straighter than the one currently under my 2500. Which is bent/kinked behind the drivers tire, not to mention the other damage being the middle truck in a 3 truck mess.

next I plan to remove the cab and bed off the 05 duramax I recently got at auction. Once the 2 frames are side by side, I'll decide if I use the AV frame as a hole or section the frames together. Using the 05 HD stuff to build it out..So after that is done I'll drop the 02 Avalanche body on the "new" frame, Gut it out and install the 05 wiring and such. Then the best of 3 interiors will go in.  With any luck I'll be painting it this summer.

this is gonna take a bit of time, just keep poking me to get it done.....

What are you plans for the clearance with the hood/front end?  I remember reading one of the other AV conversions, the reason he used a WBH is because he needed to use a hood off a diesel silverado to get the engine to fit.

most likely she will get a 3" body lift.  Also thinking of electric fan conversion on this one also. One of the reasons I got a HP tuner set up.

I have found a few AV conversions on the net, some are cladded but most are WBH. The reason being is the bumpers, easyer to keep the HD bumper Vrs modding the cladded assembly to fit after the body lift.

Yea I remember the bumper filler part too.  If I would do a lift, I would be doing a custom steel front bumper.

Some specifications if you need them. GM Upfitter manuals These manuals include detailed specifications for the chassis.

ya  made the front page :coolsmiley:

so today I took the body off to finish boxing the frame, fit the silverado's fuel tank, hang fuel cooler, modify a body mount, make the 2" body lift spacers and fit the 5" exaust. Oh ya install the rear end and load springs......

Skiping adding the second 2500 fuel tank for now, well back to work or bed?

have a long way to go

here is the 8.1

                 the 6.6 dmax

the rear section for the new frame

                                moving the stuff around

In the fire wall it's done exceapt the old remote start. I removed the seats and carpet and all the wireing on the floor to the doors. It needs a good cleaning and new carpet. I need to decide if the factory XM is going back in or what head unit for that mater.  Need to figure the wireing in the roof and how to convert

Very nice.

I so wish I was building one like that.  For now I'll just have to stick to rescuing old Mercedes diesels.  I find out Monday if I get the next project.
I'm right at least once a day.  Was this post it?  (That's for you to figure out.)

Got to work on it a bit last weekend. Mostly pulling parts off the donor and in cab wiring. Found some factory fabric seat covers to replace the cut up leather seats going in. @ $200 there just what I need for now. Also trashed the avalanches carpet and pad....just nasty. the Donor had a tan carpet, although it was nice it had some stains so tonight I redyed it a custom dark Grey

Also sold some parts so I can afford to get the new rear drive line made..... yaaaaaay

Spent some time in on her last weekend again.  Got through all the wiring in the roof , upper brake, bed lights, over head console, driver and pas vanity mirror lights, rear window defrost. Decided no onstar or XM going back right now.

Converted all the door guts from 02 to 05 and they work. once I found all the grounds  :uglystupid2:

Did a fix on the cluster. the one in the silverado had been stabbed with a knife like the seats so I ordered a replacement lens and sprung for the upgraded one with some style

today I also got the customized drive line back and put in...... drove it around the block once  :fast:

Congrats  :yourock:  I notice your cluster doesn't say "Deisel Fuel Only" on it. Did you find a decal for inside of the fuel tank door for it yet?

this one is for OBB, he liked the rear bumper I repaired for the wife's project Avalanche.

I looked in my wallet, it was empty, checked the bank, the wife moved all my $$, guess shes tired of me spending $$$$ on the Dmax   just kidding

so I pulled all the parts out that I have acquired over a few years and drank a beer or 2 till i had a plan.......

So I decided to use pieces of 3 front bumpers to make one. One 1500 bumper, one 2500 bumper and one aftermarket bumper..............

I spliced an end piece on the 2500 bumper from the 1500 one and added the fender reinforcemet of the fake one to the mix.

one thing I'm having fun with is the fuel gage is working backward.... guess that's another difference between 2002 an 2005.

I tried reversing the wiring at the tank but so far no love........

yep, had to. not much of the 02 left.  The sender is 02 cause the donor one was broke, I think that is the root of the issue. The diesel sender alone cost more than a fuel pump and sensor for my 02

Nothing like dropping $100 in the tank and it say your low on fuel :evil5:

Ah, that ole "02" syndrome again. Now I'm wondering if it's a polarity issue. The sending unit is putting out one signal and the cluster is looking for the opposite.

I think I have the fix for my fuel guage.  I went back and looked at the pictures I took when I built the fuel pick up.... the floats between the 2 I had, worked 180 from each other and I didnt catch it. I took a float off another pump I had laying around an reworked it so Saturday I'll switch it out and see if that works

Also got all the seats recovered now so they can go in

anyone want cut up leather seat covers for $100

Looks like my fuel sender needs some more work. Ran out of fuel at an 1/8 tank on a hill.  Do you now how hard it is to convince someone to bring 5 gallons of diesel to an Avalanche.

yaaay  found a newer rear bumper assembly  and found some used summer rubber to run on her.295/75/16    also found some wheels for the wife's AV

I love the turbo in this thing, it's like listening to a jet engine in the movies how they make them sound in bad weather or crashing   ie cast away

 :tickedoff:

all my fun has stopped. I discovered a head gasket is bad.....I hope its the head gasket...... guess the head bolts stretching is a common problem with these engines. the parts alone, run just over a grand so its going to be awhile till I can afford the fix. I have parked her, I had the $$$ last week but got tires and the bumper.... then pop...uggg

I have considered putting the body back on the 8.1 and move on but that would cost at least as much.

Don't you have a nice 4L85E tranny out of the other 2500 Avy? As much as you have had them apart you could probably swap them with a pair of channel locks, a hammer and a few cold ones

Alaska Avy has the same spelling as you do with the same first name. He started the thread so I was referring to him.  :winkani:

I can't believe you can do this and are worried about jumping into tuning.  VERY nice work.
2011 Silverado, Ext Cab Z-71 5.3, 6L80, Airaid CAI, Magnaflow cat-back, and a little tuning by me and HPT.

Gone but not forgotten, 2002 Victory red. The quickest lifted 4x4 AV in the US in it's day.

Hopefully I find out Monday What will happen about the trans at my dealer

the best idea I've herd  so far was once they fix it. take it out and put the 4l85 in then sell the 4l60 to pay for the change :fast:

we got flooded bad here in Owego.  A lot of people's homes were damaged and a lot of posessions were lost, but I had my Avy!  Shouldve taken some pictures sloshing through water around town and how muddy the truck got, :p

On a side note, our garage was ripped in two by the rushing waters.  The passenger side garage wall was undermined about 5 feet and the foundation collapsed, taking the entire wall with it.  I also lost all of my cleaning supplies and my spare taillight lenses (big whoop compared to others, y'know?)

well I'm cleaning yucky parts... waiting on a gasket/bolt kit to come in. I asked my 2nd fav dealer to look at my suspect head gasket and they agreed that it was bad. So with any luck this will have a happy ending. Also doing some mods as she goes back together. EGR delete and PVC reroute

who woulda thunk it.!!??  My first post here (came over from DPlace to thank an Old electronics guy for his work on LUx Nav/Bose amps - just did my conversion..and then I saw this)...So of course I just had to check it out.!  Verrrry Kewl..!  That motor looks phenomenal. .. not surprised the HG were bad, any Dmax with a build date prior to Jan 2006 had the old style crimped (like the ones in my 06 LBZ).  But I digress, an amazing retrofit and conversion..I will return to see how it works out in the end (Perfectly no doubt), and will be happy to link to this thread in DP.

Cheers,

Theo
