Adding a shot of nitrous.
« on: April 12, 2007, 06:32:47 PM »
For any of you that don't already know.  By the time that I get to MCM, I be spraying a little nitrous in addition to the supercharger.

I'm using a Cold Fusion wet kit, that they customized a little for me.  I can't say enough about the customer service guys willingness to work with me and build the kit that I wanted.

First, the majority of these kits are installed in F-bodies and Vettes and they come with a 15' feed line.  I knew that would be a stretch in a AV so they replace it with a 18' line.  I also needed a "T" adapter so I could continue to run my fuel pressure gauge.  The jets that normally come with the kit aren't very suitable for spraying it behind a supercharger.  I think that the kit normally comes with jets for 50,75, 100, and 150hp settings.  They swapped those out for 35,50,60, and 75hp jets for me.  They also threw in a plug for the N2O line so that I can seal it off when I don't want the bottle in my bed.

http://www.coldfusionnitrous.com/products.aspx

Here's a web pic of the basic kit:

I got started on the install yesterday.  I would say that I'm about 50% done.  I've made a mounting system that can be removed from the truck in under 1 minute to have the bed available for hauling stuff.  What I did was cut a 2"x6" the right width to slide into the vertical groves that are in the bed liner and screwed a flat piece of 3/4" MDF.  The bottle brackets are screwed to the MDF.  It's not the prettiest thing in the world but it serves the purpose.

In addition to having the bottle mounted, I got the feed line ran but not zip-tied yet, the injector nozzle installed, the solenoids mounted and all of the other lines except for the fuel rail to solenoid line.

I have discovered that the WOT switch is made for a F-body and our intakes are much taller.  I'm going to have to either fab a bracket from scratch or mount it in the cab and trigger it with the gas pedal.  Not sure yet.  I'm also leery of the "T" adapter that they sent me

There were some other differences in the AV and a F-body that caused me to make adjustment to the kit but nothing too bad.

I have also ordered a Window switch from Tbryne Motorsports, so I won't attempt any wiring till I get it.

Got a little more done tonight.  Mechanically, it's pretty well finished other than the WOT switch but I haven't touched the wiring yet.

Here's a couple of pics:

They are links to CAFCNA. with the img tags around them.  I tried to upload and got an error that said that they were too large or to contact an Admin.  They were all under 100k  ???

Well, my bottle valve seal leaks.  :'(  CFN offered to fix it but it would take a while so I guess I'll try to do it myself.

Update on this part.  I didn't have a bottle valve seal leaking, I had one MISSING!  They put it together without the o-ring that seals the bottle to the valve.  The valve was a PITA to get broke loose but I got it, put in a 20 cent o-ring.  I'll try filling it again Saturday.

With a little luck, I may have some free time Saturday to get it wired up and do some testing.

I'm still waiting on my MSD rpm pills for the window switch but I can test it with out them.

IT IS ALIVE!

I started easy, a 35hp shot.  It likes it.  I can't say that it made the same difference as the supercharger while using that small of a shot but I can see it in the data logs.  Without going back through all of my old logs to get exact numbers, it appears to have knocked about .3 off my 0-60 time.  I also can feel and hear it in the amount of tire spin.  If I step it up, traction may be a problem.

I said "if" but after looking at the log, I've already put a set of 50hp jets in it but haven't tried it with them yet.  I'll see how it like a 50 shot tomorrow.  ;)

You were right, they were in there long enough to make one log and check it for any problems.  Hopefully, I'll get time to log it tonight with the 50's in it.  :thumb:

Still haven't tried the 50's.  I got sick yesterday, left work early and spent the rest of the night on the couch.

I did make a deal to acquire a used purge kit.  I wanted one but wasn't willing to spend the extra money.  The guy that I buy my nitrous from has one and he needs a 3.33" 6 rib Vortech supercharger pulley which I happen to have laying around. ;)

Well good news and bad news.  I just tested the 50 shot and got a log.  Everything seems great if anything I'm a little on the rich side but zero KR.

The bad news isn't that bad.  The first time, I eased into it from a 10mph roll.  I was watching the laptop for issues more than anything.   There was no reason not to launch it and get a 0-60 log but it started sprinkling rain so I can't look at time to see what difference it made in actual performance.  At least I know it's safe to run it.  I did take the damp roads as an opportunity to try a 4x4 launch which I may have to do on the track.  It's a strange feeling to feel the front end squirm when you take off and again when it shifts. :-/

I will say that it felt stronger.  That's the first time that I've ever eased into the throttle and heard the back tires scream for mercy and the pavement was still dry when I did that.

The timing tables go to 21deg but I'm still getting some IAT pull.  On the logs I'm seeing 17 in the midrange area and 19 at the shift.  I think there is a lot more left in it either by adding more nitrous or more timing, just not sure which way to go first.  If I have time to play with it, I may try to add another degree of advance into it.  Any input on this is appreciated.

I also think that it is running too rich.  My O2 sensors are reading higher when running N2O than when I'm not.  I noticed on the sheet that they sent me with the jetting instructions that their calibrations were based on 50psi of fuel pressure.  Any time that the nitrous is spraying, I'm over 60 psi.  I've found some online jet calculators and they say that at 60psi, I need to increase the nitrous jet by .002 or decrease the fuel jet by .002.  I think I'm going to try the 60hp nitrous jet and leave the 50 fuel jet in it.  That should also help with the IAT timing pull slightly.  Again, Any input on this is appreciated.

and you never answered the other question..... have you installed the pill in the window switch yet?

Yea, the window switch is in and working.  Right now I'm running 3000 start and 6000 shut-off.  I'm shifting at 5900 so I did decide to let it spray through the shifts.  I also have a 5800 pill if I chicken out but I don't see that happening.

Well, I leaned it out a hair and DAYUM!

I went from the 50hp nitrous jet to a 60hp nitrous jet but left the fuel jet alone.  It woke it up more than going from the 35hp pill set to the 50hp.

The IAT's are still a little high but somewhat better.  Also, traction is now definitely an issue even with 12.5" wide tires.  I did a log in 4x2 and another one in 4x4 and got a better 0-60 time in 4x4.

I don't know about all of that.  In my unscientific test on the local 1/4 mile where people race it appears to have gained about 7 mph in the quarter over what it does with the blower alone.  I'm sure it's not exactly a quarter mile and I was just basing this on the speedo so that figure is a guesstimate.

Hey Rick, speaking of timing, I wonder how much advance I could add in if the tank was about 50/50 with 93 octane Chevron and 110 race gas?  They sell it at the track and I could reflash my current tune before leaving the track and filling the tank.

Dunno what to tell you on your truck, since I have not be involved in the tuning/logging.... but I know how much I can add to mine... 8)

I can't get race gas locally to test it, plus there's a half a tank of gas in it now.  I don't want to buy 15 gallon of $6.00 a gallon gas to test it and then run it out driving to Nashville on Thursday.

I was thinking about adding 2deg across the board from about 3600rpm up if I decide to buy race gas at the track.  Sound reasonable?

Bumping my own thread to see if there is anyone out there that tunes a FI vehicle and has experimented with high octane fuel.  Not thinking of anyone in particular  8)

I really have no idea how much timing I could get by with by running a mix of race gas.

Ok, I'll bump.... add 2*... add 100 octane.. and launch... :thumb:

It goes without saying that you log that launch.....

Spraying a 35 or 50 shot does not requires any timing to be retarded in any form, so with that said, if you are not running timing at the ragged edge, and I don't believe you are, then try it.....

I personally know someone who has ran 27* timing up top on 12-13 psi of boost..... under controlled conditions, of course.... 8)

Got the purge installed yesterday.  I didn't want to drill another hole in the dash so it's wired to a coil cord with a hand held push button that tucks neatly away in the ashtray.

You mentioned that to me.

It's a Cold Fusion wet kit.  I bought it direct from Cold Fusion so that I could get it customized for my application.  I did buy My window switch from Tbyrne.

I was really hoping that someone would put a N2O kit on a 1500 with a stock engine and bring it to MCM for the drag strip.  I would like to see real world numbers against another similar AV without nitrous.  It's not that much money for the amount of hp that you get.
Of course, if you use it everyday the nitrous bill would be expensive.

I'm running a small shot because of the blower.  A NA truck could spray a lot more. ;)

I almost bought it specificly for MCM since yall have blowers but the confusion of "wet & "dry" had me in limbo and now i cant even attend because of our short work force that is keeping me working weekends.

Nitrous can make just as much power as a blower, probably more if the blower kit is installed without upgraded parts and a tune.

I don't see any confusion about wet and dry.  A wet kit injects gasoline and nitrous into the engine and a dry kit injects only nitrous and lets the computer add more fuel through the stock injectors.  There is nothing wrong with a dry shot as long as you not already pushing the limits of you MAF or injectors.  Larger shots of nitrous can be safely sprayed with a wet kit than a dry.  It just depends on what you have now and how much you want to get out of it.

Dry wasn't an option for me because my MAF is close to maxed out and I'm sure that nitrous flowing through it would push it beyond it's limit.  I also don't know if it would have been good to flow the nitrous through the Vortech.

I have also ordered a Window switch from Tbryne Motorsports, so I won't attempt any wiring till I get it.

do a lot of people do this on the avalanche?  and is it more for racing?

Yea, it's too expensive to use everyday but a very inexpensive way to add a lot of power for the racetrack.
