My air filter is needing some TLC!
« on: December 30, 2010, 06:28:30 PM »
Looked at the air filter today - really had some junk caked on it.  Comes with running a ram air setup I suppose.  Wasn't this bad all the way around.

18x10 Forged Weld Wheels, BFG g-Force KDWs, JBA shorties, custom catback with FM70, Crane plug wires, Trailblazer Torque Converter, bigger cam, efans, HP Tuners custom tune, WAAG stuff, mildly boosted with Vortech Supercharger.......

Inside looked pretty good though.  I guess it was doing what it was supposed to - keeping all of that junk from getting into the engine.  I took a screwdriver and got the big stuff off the filter.  Will clean and reoil it in the spring.

Do like I do with my shop vac. Take the end of a pair of your wife's panty hose (preferably when she's not wearing them ) (and I don't use your wife's, I use ones from Twiggy ) and put around the filter. Keeps the big stuff from sticking in there.

Take the end of a pair of your wife's panty hose ...and put around the filter. Keeps the big stuff from sticking in there.
Great tip.
I really like the prefilters. Not the foam covers as I found them to be pretty restrictive and a mess to clean. I Like the fabric "mesh" covers. Much like pantyhose material, but not so stretchy. I bought one for my last truck from Summit.
This one-

I made myself. Less than $5 worth of fabric , a little elastic and some quality time with the sewing machine.

A little shopping around and there are plenty of them out there:

Outerwear prefilter
Prefilter wrap
AirRaid prefilter

A great investment.

The K&N Prefilters work great not only do they stop more dirt from getting to the filter but also stop Water (Rain/melted snow) From getting on there..I was also told from Bowtie Rick (Old member that Worked at K&N) That some people have noticed more Torq from useing them...

I'm a little late to the party but I see I'm not the only one who's too cheap to buy a prefilter - they cost almost as much as a new filter. I also came up with the idea of using a pair of pantyhose to keep the big chunkies off my filter (what is it that they say, OBB, "Great minds think alike"  :anono1:). Mine's down low and gets a lot of junk on it when I'm driving in the fields on the farm; since the farm is in the CRP program I have a lot of tall grass/weeds all over.

Well, I do use a K&N dryfilter over that filter and it still got that bad.  The elastic around the dryfilter openings has seen better days however, and it looks like a lot of bugs get around it.  I'm using it mostly for keeping water out of the intake.

The way I look at, either the filter or some sort of prefilter is going to catch all of that junk, and I don't see the point in not letting the filter do its job.

The advantage to using a prefilter is that the big chunks tend to fall off, instead of getting trapped in the pleats. At the very least you can brush them off easily.

From the K&N Site..

   K&N Air Filter Wraps

PreCharger? - The K&N PreCharger is a specially designed filter wrap made to extend the service interval of your K&N Filter when used in very dusty conditions. They are made from durable polyester material containing uniform micron openings. The PreCharger will stop small dirt particles; yet add little restriction to the airflow of the filter. The PreCharger is designed to be run dry and can be cleaned with K&N Filter Cleaner. The PreCharger is custom made to fit each application. Double stitched elastic openings assure that the PreCharger will stay in place. The PreChargers are available in a variety of colors.

DryCharger? - K&N DryChargers? are manufactured from a durable polyester material and are pre-treated with a proprietary hydrophobic process designed to prevent splashes of water or mud from saturating your K&N air filter. The DryCharger will also stop small dirt particles; yet add little restriction to the airflow of the filter. Please be aware the DryCharger is water repellent, not water proof. Depending on conditions and usage the water repellent treatment is good for 1 to 2 years.

Note - Select filter wrap part number to determine if it has an open or closed top.

I took my filter out a couple of weeks ago and cleaned all the big gunk out of it, sprayed with 409 hosed it off in the sink sprayed it again, then ran it through the dishwasher with no soap.  Set it on the register to dry overnight. Worked like a charm.  Put Lu's stockins on it today that somehow had a run in them from a New Years Party, lol.
