Tuning with HPTuners
« on: September 22, 2006, 09:02:16 AM »
I thought that someone needed to make a post in this area.

As many of you know I tune with HPT.

http://www.hptuners.com/

Anyone else?

I used to hate the term "tuner" it made me think of the ricers but now I guess I am one but I can drive over their ricers :kickass:

2011 Silverado, Ext Cab Z-71 5.3, 6L80, Airaid CAI, Magnaflow cat-back, and a little tuning by me and HPT.

Gone but not forgotten, 2002 Victory red. The quickest lifted 4x4 AV in the US in it's day.

Don't feel bad Blue.  It's amazing to have that much control of you vehicle but it's the most complicated thing that I've ever tried to learn and there aren't any instructions  :-\

I think it's something that you can spend years doing and there's always more to learn and understand.

The big GTG won't be at Huntsville next year and I doubt that there will be a drag strip where it's at.  Which brings a thought to mind.  A mid-west race weekend?  there should be a strip somewhere in southern IL or SE MO that we could meet up at.

I'm sure that MBT and I would make it.  That's 2 FI trucks.  It's close enough that the very active TN crew would be repersented there.  The TX crew is always willing to travel.  There are always a few that are willing to make a long trek to a GTG.

What do you think?

I tweaked my VE table a bit today and flashed it before I went to the bank for the office this afternoon.  I also reset my FT's.  It'll take a few miles before I can tell what it did.

I also tinkered a bit with my timing tonight and IAT advance.  I'll flash that one in the morning.  I won't have to reset my FT's for that tweak since it was timing only and not fueling related.  I got a bit more aggressive with my top end timing and slightly limited the IAT pull but I'm having a small KR problem at one certain range (2400-3000rpm and 47-60 g/cyl) and  and I pulled a bit of timing there.

I took a 200 mile drive Friday and stopped twice to make minor tweaks.  I think my VE table is dead on and my MAF is pretty darn close.  I also drove it 200 miles today, so everything is good and settled in.  I was too lazy to log the last of todays trip  but I'll get one this week and finish up the MAF.

Yes i am. (BlueDevil)   Ive been reading some posts there lately.  :thumb:

A lot of the stuff there is is hard to understand and WAY in depth.  I know understand what someone feels like when they first show up on a AV site and say  :wtf: is DRL, GTG, WBH, ect.  This is my favorite thread:

http://www.hptuners.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3833

...if you haven't read it, check it out.  It starts out simple but get you to the point of understanding a lot of the rest of the site.  PLUS, in step #1 it goes along with what I was saying in your TQ converter thread.  I think you will get a huge improvement by disabling your TM now that you have your converter in.

Glad you like it.  That should really let you take advantage of your converter.

From here, it's pretty much logging, making a minor adjustment, and logging some more.

It's generally accepted that the VE table should be your first adjustment.  I'm no expert but when your ready to tackle that, I'll help any way that I can.  It is done in SD (speed density) with your MAF turned off and you can NOT let the truck go into PE (power enrichment) mode.  This means no hot rodding  :(

Blue, did you buy the std. or Pro version of HPT?

The reason that I'm asking is that I bought the std. version and now feel like I need to upgrade so that I can tune via wideband.  Another $300 :needhug:

That's the only way to import data from a wideband to a log.  I have a lc1 sitting in the garage.

Even if I don't take it to the next level, I really should go to 2Bar SD tuning.  There is a lot more left in my truck.

Well, as Bob knows well, I'm also a user of HPTuners.

18x10 Forged Weld Wheels, BFG g-Force KDWs, JBA shorties, custom catback with FM70, Crane plug wires, Trailblazer Torque Converter, bigger cam, efans, HP Tuners custom tune, WAAG stuff, mildly boosted with Vortech Supercharger.......

I have been known to change a parameter or two also...... :wbhrocks:

BTW... I didn't see a topic/forum on fueling. I would have started a thread on my fuel rail upgrades and conversation on properly sizing fuel pumps/injectors to meet horsepower demands beyond what a 255 lph pump can handle.... ;D

Hmmm. that would would be very presumptious on your part. I would not want to come across as being a bigot for slamming you for doing something that I am in the middle of redesigning/installing a fuel rail system for.....  :thumb:

Now if you were to destroy your truck in a manner such as our friend down south did by being un-informed of the inherent dangers of oversized nozzles and pulling boosted 4wd launches back to back just to have bragging rights to the longest 4wd burnouts on a stock 4L60E, we might have to talk..... but anything short of that, I say.... spray on brotha.... it won't cost me a dime....

I hear ya!  The largest jets that I even ordered are 75 hp NOT .075".  I'll also be starting with 35hp jets and data logging with HPT (since this is a HPT thread) before even considering going up to the next set of jets.

Hehe...you won't last long on the 35 shot... you can't even feel it.... You can, however see the result in the timer in HP Tuners if you look close enough... don't ask me how I know that..... 8)

I know that you logged Damon's truck with 35hp jets but something tells me that you have first hand knowledge.

I really plan on going to 50hp jets before MCM but I'll take it one step at a time.  I also noticed that Cold Fusion rates their jets in the LS1 kit at 50psi of fuel.  Under boost I'm seeing over 60psi.  I have a feeling that I may have to step down a hair on the fuel jet of slightly bump up the N2O jet.

Two things... a 50 shot will feel like more under boost...second thing, if you are even close to KR with your timing, back it down prior to adding the spray....

I am also of the opinion that a good intercooler is the way to go for all around added gains through the center of the pull..... much more aggressive timing can be added at mid-load to assist getting the pig off the 60' mark..... of course, that first sixty feet is all tire smoke anyway.... ;D

I'm at 21deg of timing on the top end right now.  I really feel like I could add a little more.  I never see any signs of KR at WOT.  I do still have a touch under light throttle at around 2400.  I was planning on doing some testing before MCM to see if I could sneak in another couple of deg but I won't be playing with anything till I have logs with the N2O.

I'm hoping that I'll see a nice drop in 60' times due to the torque the nitrous will create.  I figure hope if I stall 2600 and the window switch starts spraying at 3000 that it will be before the 60' mark but after the tires are hooked up.  If I'm wrong, there's always the 4x4 button. ;D

Well most all of my tuning has come to a stop beyond logging effects warmer weather has on my existing tune. I am going 2 BAR OS this weekend if Keith ever gets me my application key.... :gun:

I hope to be able to make serious gains in my mid-load power since I am not transitioning into the MAF anymore... I have been running 1 BAR SD closed loop for a few weeks now and have made tremendous gains on the bottom from off idle... so much so, that I have been smelling this funny smell coming from the tranny here of late..... ::)

I nominate FlaBouy for most understated signature line!   :lies:

18x10 Forged Weld Wheels, BFG g-Force KDWs, JBA shorties, custom catback with FM70, Crane plug wires, Trailblazer Torque Converter, bigger cam, efans, HP Tuners custom tune, WAAG stuff, mildly boosted with Vortech Supercharger.......
