Odd noise....
« on: November 29, 2010, 10:00:42 PM »
I can't tell exactly where it's coming from for sure but it makes kind of a thunk sound in the rear area while driving and a buzzing/vibrating while parked or stopped sometimes. I thought at first it was the roof rack but quickly realized that it wasn't that. I'm not sure what it is but it sure is annoying. Could it be something on the fold down seat? Any of you guys experience this? I even took of the top rear plastic and re-mounted the third braked like to eliminate that.

Yes sometimes. I have also noticed a thunking type noise when I hit expansion gaps or bumps in the road. It's almost like if someone was pulling of the roofrack bars or something. It is kind of hard to describe but it drives me nuts!

Do you have a sunroof? If so there may be a bracket loose under the headliner especially if it's a power unit.

Have you looked at the crossbars on the roof rack to make sure they're locked into position?

They seem to be. How do you take them off?

The sunroof thing could be a culprit!  It may end up being for sale now anyway. My uncle kind of acts like he may want it. I think I'll move up to an 04/05 if he does.

You flip up the wide lock tabs on the ends of the bars. The bars cannot be removed unless you take of the end caps so I'm told. Just make sure the lock tabs are pushed the whole way down. I'm not sure on these but on the 05 Equinox we had, you had to have the rails in a certain place for them to lock down.

I had a slight rattle from above at speed or over bumps, never thought of the roof rack. I moved the front bar back behind the sunroof in '04 and haven't moved them since. I figured the intermitant rattle was the sunroof or maybe DVD mount/bracket came loose.

The rattle stopped Tuesday night  :dunno:  Tilted/vented roof while having a smoke lunchtime at work and forgot to close it, I usually open it an inch or two in front but it was windy and freezing. I was halfway home from work when I noticed the roof vented and closed it. Turned off defrost blower and radio, no noise  :dunno:

Maybe a loose part in the sunroof got jostled back into place.  :dunno:   Maybe a loose part, a twig or some other foreign object in the track froze in place and my rattle will start back up next thaw.  :dunno:

Yeah, I didn't want to break the little tabs when pulling up to unlock.  They seem very difficult to unlock.  :dunno:
