I just bought this new Kenwood head and did not feel like buying the non-existent harness thing to make it easier to install. I have a 4 hour car-ride back to college tomorrow and I thought I could get this done tonight.

I really need some help A.S.A.P.

I looked up the stereo color codes and the ones I found are so incorrect it's not even funny. There are literally at least 5 teal-colored wires, 2 brown, no yellow, and it's just ridiculous. If nobody can help me on here tonight I am going to try and call the local Chevrolet dealer or Best Buy tomorrow morning for some splinter of hope.

What's the build date on your Avy? (should find it in the door sticker) What stereo is in it and what color is the connector at the back of the radio?

07/01 is the build date, so it was one of the first built. The stereo is the normal CD player Theftlock Delco Electronics, where do I look for the name/model no.? (If you need it). The connector is black & white that's all really. Thanks!

Non-Bose. If I had Bose I wouldn't have to upgrade. My dad does in his dually. Not fair, haha.

If you or anyone else could get them to me as soon as possible I would greatly appreciate it. Tomorrow morning would be perfect. My brother and I are going to pull his stereo out of his '04 Silverado tomorrow, but I don't think they're the same colors.

I don't think there is an amp, but I'll check, I've been trying to just use the wires that go to the plug right behind the stereo. That's how I've always done new stereos. I just hope there's those correct colors somewhere, because there's a purple and like twelve teal wires. Why can't they just be normal like Ford and put stripes on the negatives.

You are both wrong. I have 3 teal wires, another teal with a white stripe, an orange, a brown, 2 blacks, a gray, a tan, a dark green, a light green (these greens are barely discernable), then on the other clip that goes into the stock radio are 2 blacks with white stripes, a teal, a teal with a white stripe, a pink, and a black, but that black is just electric taped. I feel like I'm going to kill myself, please help me.

Mine does not have those. Slots one-ten are as followed: teal, tan, light green, dark green, black, brown, gray, teal, orange. I figured out the orange is the constant, one of the teals is ignition or switch, and obviously the black is ground. I just can't figure out the speakers and when I try one the stereo head just says protect. I'm leaving for college in a 2 hours. I guess I'm screwed on this 4 hour car ride.

all those Teals are messing with me. I know it's about time for you to leave. Is it possible to post a pix of the back of the radio and of the plug that goes into it?

I cut all of them out of the factory plug, but they still have the colors of the tiny shreds left in I will as soon as I get back to college, but I e-mailed Chevrolet and tried prying them out of Best Buy, but they are horrible people. I might just have to pay them the 50 smacks to do they're half-ass job.

Behind the glove box? Yes, there is something there, but it is small, looks like more of a relay than amp, but what do I know. It probably is an amp. What do I do in this situation if it is?

P.S. I would like most of the stock options to work, like the radio staying on when the truck is turned off until the doors are opened and well, that's just about it.

That might be the XM module behind the glove box.

Look lower and get the Metra 70-2002 to plug in and interface with the new radio.

I highly doubt it's XM. What do you mean by "Metra 70-2002?" Is that another one of the adaptors? And does that mean I'll have to run the wires through the dash again, if so? I'm looking for the easiest way to do this, even though I pretty much screwed myself on that. It has to be an amp behind the glove box.

check this adapter out ... this may be what you are looking for .....

I used an adapter from Pac-audio when I added an amp and aftermarket speakers to my former '03 .....

Yeah, I don't plan on ever cutting anymore harnesses or plugs or anything, as for that adapter ^^ - WAY too expensive and I am not paying for OnStar anyway. I wonder if there's a way I can take OnStar out, but I have a feeling that'd be too much of a project.

As for the 702002 plug, how long are the wires? The plug goes right into the amp I'm guessing? Then do I have to run the wires through the back of the dash and how much of a pain is that? I don't want to make it look like :ass1000:

I also don't want to pay Best Buy so, I'll probably end up doing it anyway.

THANK YOU GUYS.

Can someone just give me a kind of play by play on what do to here? I am lost. I'm guessing I need that Metra 702002 plug which when I search on google says it's for Saturn vehicles. ?????

You know my situation via the video. Help me out. Nobody has yet to answer if I have to run wires through the dash from that plug or what I wire the plug into?

Here I found this for you..

So if my understanding following this thread is correct, there are three ways to wire in an aftermarket head unit.

1.  Aftermarket audio harness + attaching the radio amp wire to the pink wire on the small plug to trigger the amp.

2.  Aftermarket audio harness + bypass at the amp itself with the Metra 70-2002 harness [equivalent of the SCOSCHE INDUSTRIES GM04 or GM04B also known as AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL GWH-348]

3.  Aftermarket audio harness + bypass the amp itself and run new wiring to the speakers.

If option #1 works why do people bother with option 2 [which is not that hard to do] or option 3?

It may be expensive but alot less headaches! ....

You do know that I chopped off the stock plug?
Check out the video again so you know where I'm at.
I'm not quite sure I'm following you right.
I am not running new wires to the speakers.

All I have are random-colored wires spewing out of where the radio used to be, the plug that came with the new Kenwood radio, and an untouched amp.

well, you still need to find out where the wires go and that's going to be the issue. An old school trick is to take a "d" battery and touch two end to the battery to see which speaker "crackles". That's if you have both wires going to the same speaker at the same time. It can be done and it will take a while.

Another way is a continuity tester and start pairing up wires that way.

With nothing more than a bundle of wires that are the same color going down the throat of the dash you don't have a lot of options of figuring out which wire is which. I feel your pain on this but there's only some much you can do without tearing everything apart.

This will be a good learning lesson for others that may want to attempt this in the future.

Sorry if I can't be more helpful. If I was close to you we could have it done in a few hours but that just isn't in the cards either.

CJ, Are those wires all the same? 2 teals, 2 browns and such or does 1 teal have a stripe and the other one doesn't?
I'm beating my head here trying to help out as much as I can.

They are mostly pretty random colors.
I tried the continuity tester, and will definitely try the battery trick.
There are 2 light greens and one seems darker, one of the 4 teals has a white stripe and there are just 2 browns.
I've tried multiple/several variations.

I plugged the new stereo in (because the power and ground are correct) and played a CD on it while matching up the different combinations of wires and nothing even buzzed and that was my last resort before I came here. :blink1:

The battery trick seems plausible so I will try that. I'm at college so I don't have the continuity tester, but I'll be home in about a week to try and figure it out some more because it looks like the 4 hour drive back I won't have the stereo either.  buck2

if you don't power the factory amp or bypass it you'll get no sound.

I think it's the Power Ant wire that you run to the Factory amp for power then you should have sound...

I already have plans that night. One of my friends is graduating this semester, and finals are next week. So, this weekend will probably be studying by day, partying by night.

What was that someone say about powering the amp with the remote antenna wire? Will that work? I'm just gonna go out to my truck now and try it, all my classes are either getting out early or canceling it's awesome but I'll have to get to studying soon, so I'm gonna fidget while I can.

I just by passed the amp wire. The amp is worthless anyway (JMO). The aftermarket stereo will push more power to the speakers anyway.

And how do I bypass the amp again? Is that what the aftermarket plug is for?

I really need to thank Alaska AV for that diagram. I screamed Eureka! when I wrote it all out. I definitely needed that and I'm betting all I am going to do is just do the power ant wire to power it for the ride home next week, I can't stand not having this radio.

Okay, I tried connecting the Power Ant and all different types of "power" wires into the Amp Sense one which is purple, none of them seem to be giving it power. Someone just tell me how to bypass it without running new wires to the speakers. Is that the 70-2002 Metra plug?

Try running a jumper from your power wire for the stereo to the power wire on the amp for kicks and giggles. I would have to pull mine to see for sure how I did it and it's a dvd/nav/hd radio whichis a pain to stuff into the dash!! If all else fails you can call 417-859-7133 and ask for Luke. He owns Soundenvision here locally in SW Missouri and is a very smart guy. I bet he can tell you exactly how to do it.

Here ya go.

Hmmm i have a 02 avalanche..leather seats ect..from what i had in dash...two plugs..a big one with alot of wires..and a pretty small 2nd plug with i think it was 6 or 8 total wires..after wiring the big plug via a harness connector to my stereo..everything worked..but no sound...so i re-connected the factory only to the larg plug...everything worked..but no sound until i plugged in the 2nd small plug as well..so..the question is..what do i splice from the 2nd small plug intot he lrge after the harness connector?

If more info is needed let me know..its now 130am and i had put the factory non mp3 player back in heh..till tomorrow

Connect the "amp" wire from the new radio to the pink wire on the small plug.  This turns on the factory amp.  With mine, I simply stripped away just enough insulation to expose enough wire to attach the wire from the new radio.  That way, it could easily be restored to stock condition in the future.

I was fidgeting with it before and was going to try the pink wire, but I just wasn't too confident about cutting anymore stuff.

That sounds possible somehow because it was the only other out besides the "Amp Sense" purple wire which was my main though 'cause it says amp in the name.

I'll definitely try that tomorrow morning after my last class for the semester. (WOO!)
If that doesn't work I'm going to go to this local audio specialist shop my buddy told me about, maybe they'll help me out.

T Johns. I am forever in your debt for this. Pink is my new favorite color. That was the magic wire.

Also, wondering if you guys have any idea about Hypertech Max Energy Programmers. My brother has one for his '04 Silvy he got for a much better price than what I'm looking at on eBay. I'm thinking about trying to plug his chip into my truck. They have the same engine, so I don't see why it wouldn't work, just asking for any thoughts or warnings if I shouldn't do it...

Won't work, Those are v1n locked to one specific vehicle at a time. Your brother would have to restore his back to factory for you to use it.

WHERE IT REALLY IS ABOUT THE FRIENDS AND AVY'S, AND NOT THE ALMIGHTY ADVERTISING DOLLAR!
