07 Non-Bose Avy - purchased stock Nav unit
« on: October 14, 2010, 06:36:47 PM »
Hi All,

I posted this in the other forums so I apologize for duplicating this topic...but I need some assistance.

I have an 07 non-Bose Avy. I purchased the stock Nav unit from someone who also has an 07 non-Bose Avy. In doing my reading I see that I need 3 things:

1) GPS antenna
2) VSS harness
3) Dealer to unlock the unit once installed

Here's the catch...the guy I purchased the unit from lists the part number as:

GM PART # 25925495
DELPHI PART # 28128781

When I look up the GM part number it comes back as a Buick Enclave Nav unit...not an 07 Avy.  However I verified that the seller had an 07 Avy and this unit was definitely from that vehicle. So since the unit is being delivered tomorrow, I really won't know if the seller typed the number wrong or is lying.

So at this point...can someone tell me where/how to get the VSS harness as no local GM dealer seems to know what I am talking about.  Once the unit comes tomorrow I'll be able to see the actual part number.  Hopefully the GPS antenna part number won't matter  :idiot2:

Here's the GM part number for the antenna  GM#15201798

I've got a part number for a harness but I'm not sure what all is involved in that yet. Still digging. :blink1:

Thanks OBB. I am going to call Century 2000 tomorrow when I get home to see if they have a VSS harness that I can use.  I have called 2 different GM dealers and neither of them have the GPS Antenna in stock...go figure.

I'm trying to find out if that's the same one that mine uses. Did you get those pix I asked about?

Do you have the rpo code that came in your glove box for the radio by chance?

here's two pix depending on which rpo code you have to add the VSS pin to the back of the plug. I think I have pins to do this if there isn't one in the plug.

either way it's the Dark Green/White wire that sends the signal to the head unit.
I'm looking now for the cluster pinout. I got interrupted by a phone.

looking at the cluster pinout the same color wire is for the DIC switch signal so we don't want that one.

Wow OBB...I can't thank you enough for the diagram!  It looks like with this I can run just a simple wire from that pin to the back of the NAV unit. I'll look for the plug layout of the NAV unit tomorrow when I get home.  Looks like this might be a project for tomorrow rather than Saturday...lol

Still have to fine the VSS wire from the tranny. I found one but got too tired last night to find out exactly where that plug/harness is.

I think I know where that wire is.  There's a wire harness behind the fuse block next to the driver's left foot.  The VSS wire is within that harness.  I read that it's a little challenging to get the harness out so you can tap that wire, but very doable.  I'm going to call Century 2000 this morning and see if they can get the harness or if I'm on my own.

I'm wondering...since no one seems to stock the GPS antenna, if I install the radio today, with the VSS wire, the dealer can unlock it.  I wouldn't have NAV, but I would at least have the radio. If I add the GPS antenna next weekend, will the unit need to be unlocked again?

I don't know about that. You'll have to pull the radio again to install the antenna and I don't know if that will lock it again.

Just had a nice conversation with Century 2000.  The installer I spoke to said he was fairly confident that the VSS wire should already be in the harness.  I told him that from what I have been seeing, the VSS wire is a completely new harness.

The other thing he mentioned is that he probably has a GPS antenna that would fit and it's possible that I wouldn't need the VSS with that antenna.  He said that a lot of the aftermarket HU's don't need to tap the VSS wire but that the GPS antenna and the HU work together to track your position, speed, etc.  Not holding my breath but if he's right....that would be better than running that new VSS wire manually.

It was great seeing you today OBB!  Glad you guys were able to make it.

Anyway, here are the pics of the back of the HU and the side showing the P/N sticker.  Hope this helps...

Oh...and I do not have the Y91 option.

Here are my options:

UK3       Steering wheel controls, mounted audio, Driver Information Center and cruise controls
UK6       Audio system controls, rear
UQ3       Audio system feature, 8-speaker system
US8       Audio system, AM/FM stereo with MP3 compatible CD player

So non-Bose, no nav and no CD changer

Your Y91 option will now change.

You asked me today about my back up camera and I told you I had bought an adapter for it then we were all leaving before I could explain more. I notice that harness on ebay has the input for the camera. It'd be cool to get a tailgate bezel mount camera and wire it in. As soon as I put my truck in reverse the whole screen shows what's behind me. Intimidator has it on his LTZ and I'm pretty sure so does OldVMer. It's a great option.

MS203 found the VSS harness on Ebay for about $100.  This also included the adapter for the rear view camera.  Since I have the camera already installed I can just run the wires to the back of the radio.  Hopefully it will be here this next weekend so I can spend in the garage working...lol

Thanks OBB! I'm very grateful for the offer. I will let you know by Tuesday or Wednesday. I still need to get the GPS antenna but will call on that tuesday or Wednesday. There's a GM dealer near where I work in Anaheim that stocks the unit for $96. I will grab one there if Century doesn't have one. I also will try to get a GM dealer here to unlock the HU Friday when I get home. I am going to call one or 2 to see if they can do it without the unit being installed. Busy week!  Would you like me to come there on Sat?

To be honest I haven't looked on eBay because I wasn't sure on the radio. Since the only pics in the auction were of the front and no rear pics were provided I didn't want to buy the wrong one. I know it would hav been hard to do but after spending $600 on the headunit I figured I better be damn sure I got the right parts before buying 3-4 wrong parts lol.  If that's the right one I'll order it now.

As far as Saturday my garage will be open. I'll pm you my addy tomorrow when I get a chance quintet to work. I usually get into the office around 11a PST (2p EST). I'll be sure to have plenty of adult beverages on hand.

That antenna is at the chevy dealer in CA near where I work. I'll probably stop in there Wednesday or Thursday before I come home. Tustin is only about 10 mins from my office.

Good deal. Is your wife going to be home on Sat? Maybe I'll bring mine along and they can hit the scrapbook stores to stay out of our hair.

Actually she will be out of our hair anyway.  She has an all day scrapping thing in Sharon Center (9a - 10p) so she won't be home.

I was joking with her last night saying that people were convinced that she didn't exist.  Even when I have people over to the house she isn't there...lol.

Anyway, I hope that this mod won't take too long.  I would hate to take a lot of your Saturday for this.  So I will try my best to have things started on Friday (radio unlocked, wires for the backup camera run, old radio removed, etc).

I've ordered the VSS harness from Ebay and it has already shipped.  Since it's only coming from MI it shouldn't take but 1-2 days to get home.  The VSS harness said it had the adapter to connect a backup camera as well so hopefully I can ditch the 7" monitor in my center console and use the Nav screen.

I called the Chevy dealer here in Tustin, CA and they are holding the antenna for me which I will grab during lunch tomorrow or Wed.  I 'should' have enough of the video cables to run from the back of the truck (where the camera module is located) to the radio.  I've read where the access grommet is under the carpet by the drivers' left foot.  If I don't have enough cable I will go get some on Friday, but either way we should be able to do this.  I will have the truck up on ramps to run the wire, but I will hopefully have that run at least to the cabin by the time you get there Saturday.

I PM'd you my address as well.  Thanks again so much for offering to come over. I hope it's not too far...

Sounds like you've got it all planned out. Should be a piece of cake. I'll let twiggy sleep in and get up there early. You're maybe 45 mins away.

Just an update on what has happened so far:

Saturday 10/23: Went to Laria in Rittman to have the HU unlocked.  They told me that this was not possible as the P/N for the radio does not match the available nav HU's for this year/model truck. I gave them the PIT: 4007D (pasted below) which explains what to do.  Laria called GM this morning (10/25) and GM told them that this PIT number was not applicable to my truck. They are giving up on this issue at this point.

At 11:30a on 10/23 I went to Van Devere in Akron and the tech there said that he would have to use the 'Pass through' function of Tech2 but didn't have time to do it as it would take about an hour (they close at noon on Saturdays).  I setup an appointment on Friday at 10a to see if he could get it to work.

Monday 10/25: I called Van Devere today to make sure that we aren't wasting anyone's time on Friday and gave them the scoop on the issue at-hand.  The service rep (a personal friend of mine) is going to research this and get back to me.  I got the last 8 of the VIN from the seller...and if he was honest, his Avy did NOT have the nav RPO code listed on his truck.  So he either lied to me about it coming out of an Avy or did exactly what I am doing and had a dealer unlock it for him.

I found a guy on Ebay today that said he will unlock any radio, just to ship it to him with the last 8 of the VIN and he would ship it back unlocked.  I sent him a message with the radio P/N and the last 8 of my VIN to verify.

I also have an appointment on Saturday at Premier GMC in Rittman in case Van Devere falls flat. At this point I'm very disappointed in the fact that none of the dealers seem to know what I am talking about and they seem to be reluctant on using the instructions below on unlocking the radio despite the fact that I have printed the directions and told them they were from GM directly.  They see the '2006 chevy monte carlo' and think that the instructions aren't applicable.  I don't want to come off to the dealers as telling them how to do their job, but not sure what else to do at this point.  At any rate, I'm still waiting to hear from Van Devere again on if they want to try or not. If that doesn't work I have 2 options...resell it on Ebay or try the guy who says he can unlock it.

Instructions from GM on how to unlock the Theftlock, this seems like my issue...am I wrong?

#PIT4007D: Radio Displays LOCKED After SPS Programming - (Aug 11, 2008)

Subject:   Radio Displays "LOCKED" After SPS Programming

Models:   2007-2009 Cadillac Escalade, ESV, EXT

2007-2009 Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe

2007-2009 GMC Sierra, Yukon, Yukon Denali, Yukon XL, Yukon Denali XL

   2008-2009 Hummer H2

This PI was superseded tp update model years and text. Please discard PIT4007C.
The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern:

Some technicians may find that after SPS programming a replacement radio the display will show "LOCKED" or "THEFT LOCK". The radio theft deterrent system disables radio functionality if the VIN information sent by the BCM does not match the vehicle VIN information contained in the radio. The radio compares its learned VIN information to the VIN learned in the BCM via GMLAN. If a radio is replaced or swapped from another vehicle the radio will need to relearn the VIN information before it will function. The radio learns the VIN information during the SPS programming event.
Recommendation/Instructions:

Currently, some SPS programming events will NOT successfully learn the vehicles VIN information in the radio. Engineering is aware of this and working on a correction, however the following steps can be performed to resolve this condition if SPS programming does not unlock the radio:

   1.
   2. Perform the radio setup in SI (Document ID# 1745049) as well as,
   3. Perform A VIN Relearn. To Perform the VIN Relearn, build the tech 2 as follows:
      ?    F0: Diagnostics

      ?    2006

      ?    Passenger Car

      ?    (1) Chevrolet

      ?    W

      ?    WN Monte Carlo LTZ

      ?    F6: Body and Accessories

      ?    Entertainment

      ?    F5: Module Setup

      ?    F0: Radio

      ?    F0: VIN Relearn
   4. When prompted to erase the theft data: "select yes"
   5. Shut the key off for 60 seconds and remove the Tech 2 from the vehicle.
   6. After sixty seconds has elapsed, the VIN should relearn upon start up.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step

Sounds like you handed them the docs they need. I still can't believe it's an hour to do it. Hope they can get it done for you though.

Tempting Intimidator...very tempting.  If I knew I could get a return on the gismo by charging people to unlock their radios then it would definitely be an option...but that's a lot of radios for $3K.  :cheesy1:

Here are some other unlock instructions that a GM tech provided me to help solve the TheftLock issue.  Figured I would post them here so others could use them.  They are similar to the previous instructions however these directions use a 'loaded VIN'.  What this does is uses a VIN to a vehicle with a known stock Nav unit installed so that it doesn't ask certain configuration questions. This, in no way will affect the radio, vehicle or other BCM/OBD functions.  Just make sure you follow the directions EXACTLY.

Steps for tech II on GM 07-09 Acadia, Outlook, Enclave, Sierra, Avalanche, Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban

1.   plug unit into OBD II then power
2.   turn key to on position but do not start engine
3.   turn off all power consuming devices
4.   service programming system
5.   enter
6.   Request info
7.   Make sure you are updated to most current software
8.   Choose vehicle id
9.   Year-07
10.   Passenger car etc
11.   Make of car-Acadia
12.    Continue
13.   System will automatically cycle to collect necessary information
14.   It will ask ?Is the VIN correct??CLICK NO
15.   Key off
16.   Disconnect
17.   This process will purge all calibration codes the TECHII gathered and will allow you to load your own

At the TIS GM web computer Computer
1.   Plug in all cables
2.   Go to gm website
3.   Go to TIS 2000
4.   Service programming system
5.   TECH II remote
6.   Reprogram ECU
Enter this VIN-2CNDL037996250841
7.   .  Click Next
8.   Choose your category: RAD
9.   choose navigation
10.   Drop down categories
11.   Audio/eq/backup camera, etc
12.   Select the folder you want
13.   Check the designated box.   Make sure options selected match with the codes of the vehicle build.  To verify, codes are stamped on a silver sticker inside the glove box door. Y91, UQA etc.
Everytime an option is changed you will need to push OK
14.   At the bottom it recaps everything you have done.  Push OK
15.   Once that is done the tech II will be updated with the new car info  after you confirm everything by pushing enter
16.   wait 30 seconds before unplugging

Then unplug the tech II, take it to the car, make sure the key is off and plug in the tech II
1.   Turn the key on and turn the lights off as well as any power draining items
2.   Power on
3.   Send data to vehicle
4.   PROGRAM INFORMATION
5.   Tech II will update automatically,   Leave unit plugged for 30 seconds after installation is complete.
6.   Turn key off
7.   Unplug tech II
8.   test components
NOTE:  If audio is not present, door chimes are too loud or AUDIO is at a fixed level, the incorrect amp code was programmed OR THE PROCESS DID NOT TAKE.  Repeat the above steps and choose a different code in the EQ and TUNER profile OR TRY AGAIN.

I'll txt you when I'm done. I'll be at VanDevere at 261 and 77 at 10a. I land in Cleveland at 7:30 so I'll have maybe enough time to remove the lockpick and shower before heading up there. I told them today that if they thought they couldnt do it to not waste either of our time. So for their sake...it better work. I can be grouchy with only 2 hours of sleep lol. ::yawn::

Oh yea, I am also going to leave the front molding off until it is working.  That way I don't have to mess with it if the dealer can't fix it, I can just unscrew it, unplug it and then ship it to whoever to fix it.

Got a referral from a national member.  Talked to a Delco tech over the weekend and I have sent the unit to him to unlock. Hopefully I'll have it back this weekend.

I also got a camera to install so I will have that to do as well once the unit has been returned.

The radio is now unlocked!! Just got an email from the tech I mailed the unit to.  He was able to unlock the nav unit and is looking into enabling the backup camera RPO setting.  We'll see what he is able to do on that one.  Took him all of about 15 mins to unlock the unit...without it being in the truck.  Hopefully this will be a good weekend...if it is...I'll be making a few stops at a couple Chevy dealers and going  :ass1000:

Does anyone know if the AMP with part number 15186661 will work with the 07 Avy? I found it on eBay with the harness and everything but it says its for the 07 'hoe. Just making sure before I pull the trigger and get this thing.

You looking to add that to the Nav unit?

Speaking of Nav unit...Did you get it back from Dan yet?

Per Dan if I want to use the backup camera RPO then I need the amp RPO as well. If I have the amp RPO and no amp...well it will sound like crap.

Dan set the unit back over the weekend so I should have it at home today or tomorrow. I'm going to try and see if the backup camera will work without the RPO enabled. Hopefully the lockpick will help allow that to happen.

Not sure if he programmer my vin or not. He said just to plug it in the Avy and it will work. We'll see soon enough! Hoping to have it done Friday afternoon.
