Overspray on the Cladding ** IT'S DONE, PIX POSTED!!**
« on: October 05, 2010, 12:35:26 PM »
Ok, some of you saw my truck at Bratfest and saw the overspray I'm talking about.
So far I've tried kerosene and acetone. No luck with either. Twiggy suggested  trying a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser and it's had the best results so far however there's still paint on the cladding and I'm trying one more auto body supply shop to see what they say. If they don't have anything it's off to the insurance company to file a claim to see how they want to handle this.

You can see how well the M.E. did cleaning and getting most of the paint but there's still enough left to drive me nuts. I spent about 4 hours Saturday with a buffer getting most of it off of the paint using a product call Pro#31 for clear coat paints.

I have no idea John. I noticed it at Bratfest so it's been on there for a while. From what the guy at the body shop tells me, the truck had to catch it sitting somewhere. If it would have been moving, it would not have that much on it.

I'll give it a shot but I don't hold much hope for it. We tried all kinds of stuff on it yesterday from oil-based to alcohol based.

Since it's been on the paint & cladding for a while I doubt it will work but my brother-in-law uses paint thinner on a rag. He was a painter for years so it was pretty common for him to end up with overspray on his work trucks when they were spraying the outside of a house. The only other thing I could think of to try is Goof Off and once again I doubt it will work.

I lied; one more thing you might try - Gojo Citrus hand cleaner with pumice. Buy a gallon-size bottle, slather it onto the cladding, let it soak a while, then hit it with a scrub brush (maybe try a rag first - the scrub brush might get a little aggressive). I keep it around to clean my hands up after working on the car/house/etc and it works pretty well.

I have some hand wipes with that stuff on it in the back of the avy. I'll try that today if it ever quits raining.  buck2

Tried that. didn't work at all. I think the paint has been on there too long.

If lacquer thinner doesn't soften the paint, I'll bet it's an industrial paint.
Have you driven near any bridges that were being painted lately?
If so, it's either a zinc rich type paint or an epoxy.
I'd guess zinc rich.

Try Xylene or MEK.

Be careful of the MEK. Very nasty stuff.
Xylene is pretty harsh too, but not like the MEK.

Wipe it on and wipe it off.
Don't let it sit for long.
Both of the above evaporate pretty quickly.

Xylene, you can buy at Home Depot. It's a very good de-greaser by the way.
MEK you should be able to get from Sherwin Williams. You can get the xylene there too.
Don't let them think you are just an average home owner. They may not want to sell the MEK to you.
I'd just call them and say you need a gallon of each and ask the cost. I have no idea how much the MEK costs.
Xylene used to be cheap.

You could try mineral spirits too, but it's pretty weak.

I used MEK when I worked in the printing industry for cleaning blankets on the presses. That is pretty nasty stuff.
I really don't think it was a bridge after talking to the guy at the paint shop yesterday. It's all over the truck even in places that you wouldn't think a drive-by would reach. Someone had to be painting something when my truck was sitting at work (our garage is in an industrial area) when I was working nights. That would explain why nobody else at work has this problem. I was the only one there.

Now that's an interesting thought. Don't think so though.

Interesting this question should be asked. Our local news just showed some cars that got concrete damage from wet concrete splashing onto them when the contractor cut expansion grooves too deep into the concrete when it was still wet. Guess what? The pictures they showed looked just like yours except that they were much worse; a lot more splashed onto the cars.

I'm getting sick to my stomach.  The adjuster is here. Replacing all the cladding and mirrors, running boards is over $10,000 already and that's not counting any time to work on the paint. He told me that we may be getting close to totaling the Avy.  :blink1:

I was almost begging with the adjuster to keep looking to find a way. The Insurance companies stance is that if the Gatorback doesn't work even when done by an experienced shop, then they still have to replace everything and they're out the money they've spent on the Gatorback. Bed panels alone are over $900 each and their software says the top piece of the sail panel is discontinued because of the color.

Oh, He also said the company would want the old cladding back. I understand that in case someone is looking to rebuild a salvage vehicle.

Sounds like your insurance company wants to limit "their" policy loss based on your "road hazzard" value.

In Georgia, thats two different issues.
A "repaired" claim issue vs a "condition" value issue.

Wow.    If they total it what is the buy back?  If they offer 13k and you have a 4k buy back that's 8 - 9 k for Paint/mods.... And a reconstruct title

I don't think they want to total it. I have no clue what the buy back would be or if they would reinsure it with a recon title. I've never dealt with that before. Also, I'm not sure what my payoff is at the moment or how that would come into play.

I have 2 AV's with reconstruct title.  All state is cool with them, never even looked at em.

you'd take a hit reselling it   fixed is about 3/4 value.  I'd do it in a heart beat but I'm a bit off.

Good luck!

Thanks for the words of hope. I'm really wanting to keep it. I haven't heard back from them so I'm guessing they're checking into the Gatorback and what other alternatives there might be.

With how you have "personalized" your vehicle, just as I have, I wouldn't want to part with it either.  However, you may want to get under it and take a good hard look at how much of a toll corrosion has taken on it.  If you've got a swiss cheese frame, you may want to take the money, buy the vehicle back, buy another similar one that's been totalled, and make 1 good 1 from the 2 totalled ones.

Just my  2cents.

OBB I wonder if there is any type of media blasting that might remove the overspray without killing the cladding? I've heard of people using baking soda, walnut or pecan shells, and even dry ice as a blasting media. You might check around for some blasting  shops in your area or restoration shops and ask around they might be able to point you in a better option.n

We have a dry ice blast machine at work. They work pretty well at removing just about anything but like any blast equipment, you have to be careful or you'll trash your workpiece.

Well I got the estimate and the check in the mail yesterday. Twiggy had it in her van and forgot to bring the mail in last night. I'll scan the docs and post them up. One thing I can't figure out is the mirrors priced at $231 for the drivers side (signals, heated, power folding, auto dimming) and the passenger side at $431(no power dimming) and it says non oem. Anyway. the check is written for $10,842.46 which is after my $100 deductible was taken out. I need to call them and check on a few things like the mirrors (that my just be the housing and reusing my glass) and if they want these old parts back.

Drive it to Alaska, drop it off, let him fix it up. In the meantime, go buy yourself another Av with the $10,000.

It looks to me like you have a dilemma on your hands now. Do you fix up a truck you've put a lot of sweat equity in and know, even though the frame is rusting apart, or do you cut your losses and buy something new? Of course you could always put a new frame under it too..............

I need to get in touch with Wilsonracing about that frame rust. He works on stuff like that for a living. I haven't seen him log in for quite a while.

Things I've thought of and it all depends on the Ins company.

I can pay the truck off and trade it in after a few weeks of demodding buck2

I can order the parts myself, take them to the shop around the corner and pay the labor to put them on and take care of the paint. Hopefully this would allow some leftover $$ to repaint what's needed and take care of the frame. (this would depend on what WR says about the frame)

I can just take it to the shop with the check in hand and say "Call me when it's done"

Well the INS just told me that they leave it up to the shop to deal with the used parts so now the question is do I have it Gatorbacked and the whole truck painted and the frame rust done or (___________) insert idea in the blank.

Forget the Gatorback if you're going to have it done, have it sprayed with some type of bedliner material. It will be a whole lot more durable than the Gatorback. You could even have the frame done once the rust is dealt with first.

GandolphXX, as well as a couple of other people from TOS, had his done with Superliner and had really good results.

I'm pretty sure the rust is just on the surface ( for now anyway). I called WR a little while ago and the POR15 he used a few years ago is still holding up just fine. You can even color paint over it and it still holds up great. I'll check that frame out with the ballpeen hammer test and as long as it's still solid, I'll take a page out of M1's book of frame painting (only I won't paint my garage floor :evil5: ) , check into that stuff you mentioned MBT, and have the rest of the paint taken care of. Might have a little left over for an exhaust when I'm done.

GandolphXX, as well as a couple of other people from TOS, had his done with Superliner and had really good results.

That bedliner stuff may be an idea for my scratched cladding.

There is another brand called Chassis Saver that is similar to POR 15.

Well the INS just told me that they leave it up to the shop to deal with the used parts so now the question is do I have it Gatorbacked and the whole truck painted and the frame rust done or ("get happy") insert idea in the blank.

Anyone know how to get hold of him? Didn't he have AVO? I wonder how it's holding up...

I'll check into this also. I know when I talked to WR yesterday he told me that he treated all the parts of his lift kit with it and then painted over it with the stock part colors and the stuff still looks like new. I'll have to look into that with this product.

Either way I go with the frame I'm afraid it'll have to wait until spring for it to be warm enough to cure properly unless I want to heat the garage for a few days and ride the bike to work. The weather is getting a little iffy for that this time of year. I'll ride if it's over 40* but it has to be dry out. buck2

Did you get the info you needed for GandolophXX? If not, one of the Texas members should be able to get you info as he's in Dallas.

I got a phone number for him and was told he's in Houston.Hmmm. I didn't have time to call today. I realize there's a 2 hour time difference but I'd rather call earlier in the evening.

I talked to the body shop today. The expect to have the avy for 2 weeks to do everything. I checked out the stuff Richie posted about and I can get that locally. That's also the same stuff the body shop uses when restoring old cars. The do some extensive cleaning of the frames first though. That's just the way they like to do it. Says it comes out better. I'm going to pull the cladding myself to save a few bucks and hopefully relocate my horns up front when I do that along with a few other things that I've been wanting to do. They have a full lift and will even do the frame painting for me. I'll save enough to have the truck's paint fully restored also. No dings, swirls, scratches etc. I should still have some pocket money left over for an exhaust and a damn nice dinner for Twiggy and I.

No I didn't. I totally forgot about that.
I did trade a few emails with Gandolph today though. He said his cladding is still holding up great and it sits outside all the time in the brutal TX heat. Only problem I may run into is finding a dealer/installer in this area.

I haven't seen it in the dark grey yet. I might not be going through all this if I could have found the right match. I would have just painted it and been done with it. I did for a short time entertain the thought of going black but didn't know if I'd like it with a dark colored Avy.

almost ready to paint. Either today or tomorrow. The rope in the 2nd pix makes it look like the pix is torn. Picking up the new wheels and tires from the shop that's balancing them today. They're doing the thing where they toss the bag of beads in the tires, the bag breaks open and as the tire heats up, the beads stick to the inside of the tire where they need to. Once the tire cools off the beads release and the process starts all over again. No wheel weights on the outside for me.

Oh, the new artwork is approved also. :cheesy1:

It won't even look like the same truck when you're through. I guess I won't get to see it in person until Bratfest next year but then again, Twiggy may say you're bringing her Av instead of yours.

They're doing the thing where they toss the bag of beads in the tires, the bag breaks open and as the tire heats up, the beads stick to the inside of the tire where they need to. Once the tire cools off the beads release and the process starts all over again. No wheel weights on the outside for me.
I talked to a friend of mine, that owns an alignment shop, about those beads.
He doesn't recommend them. He said those were developed for semi's.
This guy is sort of an ole school kind of guy, but normally gives good advice.
When he balances a wheel, he may break the tire loose a few times to make sure he uses the least amount of balancing weights.
If you do go with the beads, I'd like to hear how you like them so I can let my friend know.

He's more than a little old school if he will take the time to break a wheel down and rotate the tires. Nobody wants to take the time to do that any more. So where is this guy at? I wouldn't mind sending some business his way sometime.

Ok, here's the drivers rear quarter panel. It's wet now but this is how it will look once the whole truck is buffed and gets 2 more coats of clear.
The rest of the graphics will be revealed when the truck is completed.

It's still the factory blue. Just the lighting in there makes it look a little darker. It may look really dark because it's wet in that pix. He used something to clean it off and that's how it comes out with that stuff on it.

Just got off the phone with Summit Racing. The parts that were ordered 12 days ago were sitting in GA collecting dust  :wtf:

They'll be here Thursday I'm told after I had a chat with the guy. :knuppel2:

Ok, the parts got here yesterday and work resumed on it today. Gonna go over there tomorrow and take the train horns out so I can clean them up with the hope of relocating them also while the front end is off of it.

Nope, been trying to fit them up front for a few years now. I MIGHT be able to fit them with the bumper cover off.

Drivers side is buffed out and he had about half the passenger side done. Takes so long as he hits the paint with a buffing pad 3 times and then with a foam pad another 2-3 times. And he still has to answer the phone and take care of other customers. This thing should look like a sheet of glass when it's all done.

Talk about a pleasant surprise. The shop was supposed to be closed last Fri, Sat and this week through Wed so the guys can go out deer hunting. On the way home from work this morning I saw the side garage door open so I stopped in. The paint guy doesn't deer hunt so he's been in the shop working. The cladding is sprayed and ready to go back on. The little blemish by the right front fender has been fixed and the parts from Summit have been installed. They need to finish a few more little things on that. It's looking like it about "mop up" time on it. Do the final buffing and put it all back together. I should have it back by this weekend in time to drive it in the snow  buck2

Yup   also means we're hitting our overcast season so I prolly won't have any sunny days to get good pix until about March banghead1

They need to finish up the wiring aspect of the lift. New wheels and tires are sitting at the shop waiting to go on. Underneath still needs sprayed and the gap guards put it along with the bumper relocation brackets.

Not gonna pass anyone up as far as the amount of lift.  :dunno:  Just a standard 3" plus that extra inch I'll get out of the tires being taller.

Dale over at Performance Auto Group has been in close contact with me over the last hour. Seems like my '04 with a late '03 build date has some parts that were used on the '02's and some '03's. Crumple zone behind the bumper cover.
He wanted some info about the truck to insure I'm taken care of and for future orders of other customers.

you need to with a body lift or you'd have a nasty gap between the bumper and the grille.

Remeber Alaska_Av's oh poop thread.
His bumper got relocated and redistributed all in one quick,,,,      crunch.

Not the best way to relocate it but, very little effort required.
I'm right at least once a day.  Was this post it?  (That's for you to figure out.)

Yeah, I suppose it would look better if you just moved it up to match the body lift.

waiting on the correct brackets from P-A-G. They had to have a set made. Guys at the shop are sick of looking at it also (that and they want paid). They were working on other stuff as mine was at a standstill waiting on parts for two weeks.

Stopped in today. All the underneath is sprayed and I helped Craig put the gap guards on. Boss said he was going to buff it today ( I hope). Supposedly, the brackets will be here tomorrow for the front bumper. Dale at PAG told me today that his UPS tracking shows them arriving at the Maumee, Oh depot at 3 pm my time. The tracking number he gave me shows them not getting here until Monday. buck2 I will be checking it on a regular basis throughout the night.

Here's a few pix from today. I left my camera at work so I had to use my phone.
Of course the artwork is blurred out until it's all done :cheesy1:

Just as I thought. The guy (Dale) at Performance Auto Group lied to me yesterday about the package. He told me it hit a service hub in Ohio yesterday afternoon and provided me with a tracking number.  I've been  watching it on UPS's website all night to update and nothing other than when it left AZ. I just talked to a UPS rep and was told that what I'm seeing on the website tracking is correct. It won't be here until Monday  :tickedoff: :verymad:

If for some reason the guy on the phone was wrong and the brackets do show up today then all is good. If not, a nastygram will be fired off to P-A-G about the whole ordeal with their tech support and it will be posted plainly here and on Facebook. Sometimes the power of mass awareness of lack of customer satisfaction goes a long way. It worked with an issue we had with our new washing machine last year. Within 1 hour of sending off an email to the company, the guy holding up the part we needed was calling me to give me the tracking number of the part that was being overnighted to me.

I know you're all sick of me posting the "getting there" post. I was at the shop for a bit today. Door handles and all the weather stripping around the windows are are back on.  Mike (the owner) needed to buff the door that had to be redone. Front bumper with the correct brackets was going back on today ( I think). Looks like just putting all the cladding back on along with the new wheels. Mike said it's number 1 priority as he wants it out of his shop no later than Friday. I'm hoping for tomorrow. We'll see. ::popcorn::

Yeah yeah.....The got the front bumper on. Did a final buffing on the whole truck and the boss found a couple of spots he didn't like. Sand the tailgate and drivers door again. The painter was clear coating those parts when I left about 45 mins ago. Starting to "celebrate" with a few cold ones early afternoon (before Mike found those spots) and now I'm about half tanked after being up for over 26 hours. Back to the shop about 8am for me. I did get my new B/U camera mounted in the TG bezel and I'll be hooking that up tomorrow as soon as the TG goes back on. Train horns are all  over the garage floor at the moment. I need to have the tank rewelded to the frame as I took it off for the rust treatment. Nite all.

Ok peeps. I have another 90 pix to take care of. Hope this one will hold you over until I can do something with all the others. It's been a long wait but I'm really pleased with it. I do need to add a leveling kit up front as the 295's are rubbing even with the 3" lift.  Hopefully we'll get a little sun tomorrow so I can get some better pix.

I'm talking about the Pinocchio picture I added last night, not Tdy's cricket comment.

Your rocking now!
First you'll lose your mind
then any free cash laying around
Awesome mods will bloat your credit limits
Acting like a crack addict, refinancing your home, farm out the kids......
You'll cry yourself to sleep, stuff like, must get new rims.
Lift it skyward or drop it like it's hott.
Important questions like, polished or chrome, will shadow you day and NIGHT.

OK so now where did you park toget this mod started?   It looks great. The deeper wheels look way better than the ones I saw with the smaller offset but they probably contributed to the rub. The leveling kit should cure it though.
Bought 04 Summit White 1500 4X4 summer of 08. Mods 17X8 Black Rock Wheels, Stainless Fender Trim, Hood  Deflector, Custom 1/4 Panel Emblems, Black Billet Bowtie, Amber DRL's, 800W power inverter for portable PS3 & 13" TV, Recon Big Rig Ice LED light bars, Renegade roof light bar.

Ok, an updated pix with the new torsion bar keys. New stance is 41.5" at the center of the front wheel well and 42" at the rear.

Looks good Mike!

So did the new torsion keys take care of the front tire rubbing?

it did on the right side but not the left. Truck is even side to side so I'm still chasing that down. I think it's the mud guard itself. I might change them front to back and see if that does it.

If it's not the mud guard it's probably the fender liner. If you look on the inside you'll see a lip/bump about 6" up towards the inside. My 20s rub slightly on that lip at full lock in reverse. I pulled the whole fender liner back with a zip tie right in that area and it pretty much took care of it. You can heat the lip up with a propane torch and press it back out of the way with a putty knife or something similar.

It's the guard alright. I can see it when I park the truck with the wheels cut. It's actually broken the guard at the lower screw that holds it in. Here's a few pix but I think I might have it figured out after doing some looking when I took the pix.

Fixed it. The cladding wasn't pushed back against the fender well the whole way. Loosened up the bolt underneath holding it on, pushed the cladding back and retightened the bolt. Problem solved.
