Somene, anyone I need help!
« on: September 19, 2010, 02:14:14 PM »
Okay, I am in serious need of some help in regards to the Pred and my Av NOT starting.  I replaced the Knock Sensor...yet again and I put the Av back to the factory tune in accordance with the Pred instructions.  Now when I turn the key on all she does is tick out of the daytime running lights relay and NOTHING else.  I received an error when the factory tune went back in and it said to see the "unknown error" and that was it.

Can someone, ANYONE call me if they can help.  Six Six Zero 441- 47 Zero 1

I seriously have five gallons of fuel and a road flare standing by...

The responses you got on the Diablo forums are correct.  You will need to contact Diablo tomorrow to restore the updates to your PCM.

The first thing I would do is make sure your battery is FULLY charged. Then try restoring the factory tune one more time. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. My Predator did it to me one time when I had it; that's what I did and it worked fine on the second upload. Any little electrical glitch can cause a problem with the upload/download process. You also want to make sure everything is turned off - radio, fan, drl's, etc. Set your parking brake to make sure the drl's and headlights don't come on. Don't open a door or leave one open when doing the upload/download and don't put any electrical load of any kind on the system.

Beyond that, I can't offer any additional suggestions other than getting a restore done like Trav suggested.

I've done this with mine before when programming. I didn't turn the key the whole way to the on position so the tune didn't load. Make sure you're turning the key to the right spot. It's easy to miss if you've got a few things on your mind while you're doing this.

Black Beauty is dead.

Why the fatal diagnosis?  Can't they just restore the program to the original factory specs and then upload it to the AV?  Something doesn't sound right here.....

I agree with

Something doesn't sound right here.....
.  The shop says they tried five or six times and nothing happened.  They want to install a new PCM and bang me for around 1K.  I'm ready to tow it somewhere else or trailer it home....  Either way I am pissed.  1. they never asked me if I wanted the update, they told me it was done after the fact.  The f-ing Predator was either in the center console or in the passenger seat when the Av was at the shop getting the diagnostic done on the Knock Sensor.  They, as a professional mechanic should know with the tool setting in PLAIN SIGHT that something was done to the vehicle.  As I'm sure everyone here is aware, everyone runs around with one of these in their vehicles because it's all the rage these days....  Bottom line, they should have asked if I wanted that shit done before they did it.

I own a small business.  If I did that to my customers they would go crazy.  You don't just perform work because you feel like it.  You always check with the owner of the item.  *off rant*

I need a beer and my cigar.....  I'm here all night and tomorrow until **:30!  HA  Thanks for letting me vent.

Now it's a little more clear what happened. A new flash was installed over the top of the Predator tune and you tried to reinstall the original factory tune, or so it would seem from your last post. If that's the case you've definitely lost the Predator tune so it's now a boat anchor, other than still being usable to check OBD codes, until you send it back into Diablosport and pay them to fix it.

For less than $1K you can get a new, tuned pcm from someone like Black Bear, Nelson, or Wheatley that's set up with your VIN. Then you likely would have to have a crank relearn done at the dealer, which should cost around $95. I think Nelson only charges around $200 for a new pcm and then around $500 for the tune. THey don't like to do it but they should be able to get an original, stock pcm tune from the HP Tuners repository (Black Bear uses EFI Live; I don't know if they have the same type of repository as HPT).

I just got a Black Bear PCM tune for $300.  I get $100 back if I return my PCM (which I already have).  I am excited about their tune!!  Much better than any Superchips or Hypertech that I have used in the past.

I'll look into the Black Bear and the such.  But I'm just pissed that the auto shop should have know, or told me what was going on.  Hell, I know enough to be dangerous with a calculator and as such I have been very careful on what I do with the Predator.  I still don't know why they can't recover the original factory tune on the PCM.  This is a professional garage and as such I expect better service.  If I wanted this type of stuff I'm sure I can find Billy Bob's shade-tree garage and bait shop somewhere around here.

Today should prove interesting to say the least.

So tell them quite simply that you expect them to have the Chevrolet dealership reflash your PCM at their cost since it's their fault you're dead in the water. If they are a stand-up, responsible business they should do this without a second thought. If not, lesson learned.

With the handhelds, unless you've got an obvious need for a non-stock tune, such as running forced induction, your best bet is to always put the stock tune back in before turning in your truck for service to prevent this from happening.  I don't think it would be a problem with something like HPTuners which has a specific VIN and/or model type and year licensing arrangement vice the single tune for a range of vehicles in a model year like so many of the handhelds employ.

Edit:  Ski - you may want to take this as a warning.  If you take your vehicle in for service, they may put an updated GM tune in it for you without asking first and you would loose your custom tune.  I don't know how Black Bear handles that situation.

In hindsight, I probably should have kept my original PCM with the stock tune, but have to finance the cam swap!!  Once I get the cable tune, it will be on my computer through EFILive.  I would just need to procure the cable to download it if that happens.

I've had my Avalanche in the shop one time prior to obtaining HPT. I made sure the service writer put DO NOT FLASH PCM in the service ticket writeup. You could also pull the fuse for the OBDII port and/or put tape across the port so that they would have reason to question "WHY"?

That shop should cover the cost, what ever it may be, to get your vehicle back to at least stock tune.
They should then pay for for your predator to be reloaded.

Hey guys,

The shop won't cover any expenses other than the tow bill to the shop.  Lesson learned on this one, Performance Automotive on 13 highway South.  They are located next to Lindsey Transmission on the North Side.  The shop owner keeps saying, nope...had no way to know what was on/in the pcm.  I told him that I didn't ask for any updates and that I was told after the fact of it being done...  He kept to his statement, we didn't know.

I told him the tool was in the front seat, how could you miss it?  He replies, well I don't know if it was there or not.  Christ I had to reset the knock sensor just about every time I went somewhere, I know for a fact it was in the seat or on the center console.

Well I have a trailer and we are grabbing the Av in about 20 minutes and towing it to Lebanon for a new pcm and all updates from a GM dealer...$300 for everything.  I just need to get the Av there.  Once again proving it's not what you know but whom.

Well my ride is here, we are off....and not just for the trip.....

Warrensburg to Lebanon, towing the Av, is not a short trip.

I agree with OBB - stop payment and then take his a$$ to small claims court for the costs incurred to fix it, including the tow bill.  That's my 2cents, for what that's worth!  :winkani:

well, since no answer to my question, I'll put it out there this way...

if your predator is one of the newer ones on a 9rXX revision...  I can help you with unlocking/resetting that...

BUT...

if it's an older one, on a 2.xx or 1.xx revision, then you're SOL and have to ship it to diablosport to get it unlocked/upgraded, which will cost you $149 since that old tool is out of warranty at this point...

Hey guy, have another update.

I didn't pay the auto shop a red cent, I took my Av, got the keys and left.  We made the trip to Lebanon without a problem.  We got the Av unloaded at Neil Twenter Motors in Lebanon, MO and they had the Av running in roughly 20 minutes.

They installed some GM updates and the theft stop updates and we were good-to-go from there.  I also picked up my SIR coil.....WOW that's going to be fun tomorrow, NOT!!!

@ 06MonteSS, I have no idea what version my Pred is.  There is no way in hell I'm plugging it into my Av until I find out if it's safe.  I will not experience this again.  If the tool is not ready for the vehicle (to tune it), can it still be used to check sensor faults and the such or will it try to kill the PCM again.  (keep in mind, I know not to try any tunes)  But can it be safely plugged into my Av without causing any damage to check the version?  I bought it new, under a year ago.

And on a plus, the Av is running great.  She pulls hard through the gears and has been getting with it when needed.

Thanks again to all for the input, advice and help!

yes, you can plug it in to the truck with no worries...  the obd port will power it up... and once it gets to the main menu, the revision number will be at the top of the screen...

yes, you can use it to clear/scan codes...

k, so you bought it brand new less than a year ago - so it should be a new 9rXX revision tool, and can be unlocked/reset over the phone, and also it's still under warranty...  contact diablosport tech support... provide proof that your ecm got flashed over by a shop, and they'll walk you through the reset/unlock process over the phone, at no charge to ya...

also, explain your other initial issue with them.. it doesn't sound like it was the tuner's issue, sounds like it was an issue with the truck or what those other guys did...

Glad you got it going again. Sucks you had to haul it that far to get it going though.

I'll spread the word at the base about Performance Automotive. If the word gets around enough, it will definitely put a dent in their business.

Thanks again to everyone for the input.  I'm still pulling a knock sensor fault.  I had the GM dealer in Warrensburg do a diagnostic and they said it could be the wiring connector, or it could be the sensor (as it's not a genuine GM part......).  They wanted $60 for the two-three feet of wiring from the sensor to the first plug.  And they said close to $700 for the sensor swap.......

Man this has been a pain in my  :ass1000: .  I'll change the wiring, but how can something that is built to detect a specific frequency keep going bad...in under a freaking week...  Here is to hoping the wiring connector is at fault!

I'll also get the Pred version and give Diablo tech support a call with the information.  I take it i'll need to fax the new pcm receipt to them for verification of the work?

And don't forget to stay tuned for another exciting, and somewhat amusing, update on WTF is wrong now!

Almost forgot...the SIR coil and wiring assm went in without a hitch.  Two drop lights and an hour later we were buttoning the column back up and she is good-to-go.
