Serious Modding GTG 6-10 Oct
« on: September 14, 2010, 04:25:49 PM »
Well, I've got a transmission sitting in the garage waiting to go in, and a torque converter on the way, and Ski Edition has a torque converter and a cam he's wanting to install, so we're planning a gtg to help each other out and hopefully recruit some of you to hand us tools, turn some wrenches, skin some knuckles, and probably drink a beer or two.  I had been planning on taking vacation the week of 4 Oct, then Ski started PM'ing about coming up here for some help, the very day I wrapped up my tranny rebuild.  (How convenient!   :evil5:)

He's bringing up his camper and planning on staying at a State Park about a half hour away, and Didit is interested in bringing down his camper, or so Ski is telling me.     We know from some of Didit's posts earlier this year that he can tackle a y-pipe remove and replace, so I know he can do something to help out with the transmission removals.  I've pulled out my tranny twice - the last time basically by myself, and have swapped my cam, as well as helped KY_Bob swap his, so I know how to get this done, and roughly about how long it will take.

The plan, which I am sure will evolve some as we get closer, is to plan on close to a week, but then possibly do some shortening of the time span depending upon how much help we can attract.

This will be at my house, and as I'm doing this on a hotel computer which gave me a 3 minute warning about 30 seconds ago I'm going to wrap this up for now so that I don't loose this entire post!    banghead1

Edit -

I've got a 2.5 car garage fill with a bunch of stuff, but will clear out enough to get one truck in the garage.  If the weather is good, we could do a cam install outside, but due primarily to the slope of the driveway, would prefer to not do the tranny work outside.  If we do work on two at a time, a few extra tools would be helpful, such as socket sets and screwdrivers.  I have all the tools needed to the work we'll be doing, but we might want more than one 10mm socket at once for instance.

From Ski's other thread, it looks like we've got:

As you know swappin the tranny is the easiest, lol.,   drop the drive shaft, loosen the bolt on the tranny mount, put jack in place, remove bolts on bell housing, remove cooler lines and electrical, slightly lift, remove cross member, slide tranny out, If I remember correctly, lol.   I'm gettin old and its been a long time,  the 10th is my birthday, I'll have to check and see if I have a party to attend, lol.

I will have my Torque converter installed this weekend, so we can scratch that one off the list.  I figure we can do rock, paper, scissors to see what we do first (possibly pre-weekend) and what we will actually have left.  The program will evolve.  For you folks wanting to come, I will have space for a few folks in my camper on a FCFS basis.  Let me know!!!  I figure that I will take care of buying the meat on Saturday night if we want to do a cookout (it's the least I can do).

Mike, my birthday is the 5th and I owe you a 6 pack already!!

You doin it yourself, really not much to it, just patience, and if I remember right JUICE IT BEFORE YOU PUT IT ON< LOL  my god its been twenty years since I've done any tranny work ,lol.    Looks pretty straight forward on the  AV though, just make sure you get the keyway slot lined up (if they still use them) and push it all the way up, tighten it up, not sure what the torque spec is though, your paper work should tell you that though,    and if I rember right the first two swaps I did by muscle and said I would never do another one again without using a tranny jack, what a releif they are.

My mechanic (bad back) is down, but he is going to lend his expertise/supervision while his son and I get it done (with a tranny jack).  I'm too old to be bench pressing transmissions.

Glad you're getting it done, shouldn't be too hard with experienced mechanic nearby.

let me see how my schedule plays out at work. We just submitted new tour selections for the next 6 weeks. I may take a few days vacation and head over. I don't have my daughter that week so that's a good start. If someone can guarantee good weather, I'll ride the bike over. I'm gonna take for granted this is a guy's only event.

Can't guarantee the weather.  No, I don't think it's a guy's only event.  My wife may drive up for the weekend and hang out.  If you want to bring you're better half, I have room for you 2!!  May be a little rowdy in the campground, especially if Lu and Didit are next door!!

This sounds like it could be a lot of fun but I'll have to see how I am feeling after surgery.  I'm restricted from driving for two weeks after surgery and I have a post surgery follow up appt on Friday, 10/8 but I'll see how I'm doing.  This is a GTG that I would truly love to attend even if I can't do that much.  I don't know if I like the title of beer/tool wench, I would much rather be hands on for this one!!

guess we have another thing to talk about Mike ... I wouldn't mind attending a few days .... not sure about where I can lay my head or not .... let me know when you get your vacation figured out ... I could always try and take a few days off and go over too .... depends on if anything is going on with the girls after school ....

Since only one weekend is involved here, Oct 8, 9th and 10th.  McCormicks Creek St park is all but  sold out for this weekend, however there are plenty of sites available at Shakamak St Park,  I'm awaiting Ski's call or vice versa, lol to see how he wants to do the reservations.   :uglystupid2:

I'm looking at sites number 83 and 82 if ya got your maps handy.

On my phone. Not sure if there are going to be any more campers. Doesn't matter to me as long as one is available wed-sun. Will check when I get home. Really, your call Mike and I can piggyback your reservation when I get home.

Shakamak---I'll get 82 and you get 83.  That way, if there are other that want to camp, then there looks to be plenty of sites.  Sound like a plan!  I'll reserve now if you and Lu are OK with that.

We'd have loved to have you Intimidatoruag, but understand.  We may set up a TV in the garage and at least listen to that game.

Sounds like Didit thinks taking out and removing a transmission is an easy job.  Glad he's coming.  He can do more than just remove the y-pipe!

I sort of thought we'd be doing a lot of grilling while working anyway.  When doing jobs like these with KY_Bob, we'd usually work an hour or two after dinner.  Will probably depend somewhat on when we get rolling in the morning.  Bob and I weren't too much of early starters.

Ski, I was thinking about doing your truck first.  If we did mine first, and heaven-forbid there was an issue with my tranny, my mind wouldn't be totally focused on your truck.  Also, want to make sure yours is good to go before having to hook back up to your trailer and drive back down to TN.  And finally, it looks like we'll be getting some help with tranny swapping experience over the weekend!

Just got back from picking up the truck from my mechanic.  He decided he felt well enough to install the TC himself.  5 1/2  hours from drop off time to pick up time.  I can't believe what a difference it makes.  Actually feels like I have 5 speeds now!!  Really had to feel it to believe what a difference it makes.   :winkani:

We can do my truck first--that's your call, since yours is only a 5 1/2 hour job.     (That's what Didit said)

I've been told that I have to be here on the 5th (birthday), so plan on leaving early AM on 6th and get up there and get set up and be at your house by 1000ish.

OBB---You and Deb have a place to stay.  My family may be coming for the weekend, but you folks are covered!!

The basics are easy, lol, I never once said how many hours it would take, I remember once when Charlie (my son) was in High School it took me two and a half weeks for a front wheel drive trany on a little Buick we had gotten for him.
Took my two and a half hours on a swap on a 82 Chevy Wagon, hehe

We'll get it done!!  The mechanic today took the transfer case out also, but when I had the tranny rebuilt, he didn't.   I'm sure there's more than one way to slay this beast!!

Hmm..I'll have to look at mine tomorrow. I know an older furd I had, the transfer case was on the back end of the tranny. I had to rebuild it once (the TC) and did a clutch in the tranny also. That TC had to come off to get the tranny off. Now I'm curious about these.

I don't have to worry about a transfer case in my Z66.   :winkani:

5.5 hours - incredible.  Need to add some time because I'll want to drain the fluid before we drop the tranny.  On top of the tranny jack, the tranny sits too high to get out from under my truck on my jack stands without tipping the bell housing end down quite a bit, and we'd be dumping tranny fluid, not to mention it will just be lighter to move around with a couple of gallons of fluid.

I will be very pleasantly shocked if we do this in one day.  More hands will make it easier, but I imagine having your truck on a lift helped immensely.

Ski, glad to hear how happy you are with your TC!  What all are you bringing parts wise, especially springs???

18x10 Forged Weld Wheels, BFG g-Force KDWs, JBA shorties, custom catback with FM70, Crane plug wires, Trailblazer Torque Converter, bigger cam, efans, HP Tuners custom tune, WAAG stuff, mildly boosted with Vortech Supercharger.......

Yea, I am more than happy with it.  I also put in a Black Bear tune PCM and the shifts are smooth as I ever remember this truck shifting.  As soon as they get a cable available, they are going to send it to me to do a log scan.  Probably the end of October.  Justin at BB said the GT2-3 would be OK with the tune I have in there now, but he will wake things up with the log scan and tune.
Parts list as I have it now.  Please amend as you see fit.  I was going to get with you  in the next couple of days to make sure we had everything we needed.

Cam--Lingenfelter GT2-3
Pushrods--Comp 5/16th's diameter, 7.4" length
Springs--LS6
Stock Retainers
12 locks
Valve stem seals
Crank Bolt
Front end seal
Still reluctant on a timing set.  Have 67K miles and don't want to get into an issue with it taking up a bunch of time that we might not have.  Advise what you think!

Thanks Greg!!

That looks pretty good.  Other than the front end seal and valve stem seals, I don't think we'll need to replace any other gaskets.

As long as the LS-6 springs are not duals, I think my spring retainer should be ok.  I spent probably 8 hours just doing the springs putting in my dual springs with that thing.

We'll be pulling out the radiator.  You'll need coolant to refill it when we put it back in.  You can either bring some or buy locally.  I've got a NAPA in town but have to go about 15 miles to get to an Autozone, Advance or O'Reilly's, although they are all on the way to the campground.

I should have some cheap 5w-30 in the garage for oiling up the cam, pushrods and rockers during the install.  If you are picky, pick up a quart of your favorite.  I'm picky - use Redline, but used the cheap stuff myself when installing my cam.  If it were me, I'd do an oil change once you get back to TN after breaking in the cam.

The timing set is for me a PITA, or litterally was a pain in one of my fingers for weeks.  Seemed to have done some temporary nerve damage.

The GM sevice manual calls for fully dropping the oil pan, although at least one of the aftermarket parts suppliers suggest just loosening the oil pan bolts to get a little more clearance.  To replace the bottom timing set sprocket, you have to pull the oil pump, and the hard part is getting the screw that holds oil pickup tube in the pump started after reinstalling the pump.

The screw screws into the bottom of the pump.  You have to reach in between a gap in the slightly lowered oil pan (there's a gap before you loosen the oil pan and when you get the pan down a bit you've got maybe an inch or so of finger clearance) with your fingers going in at about a 45 degree angle and start a small screw into a hole that you can't see at an up angle.  Keep in mind this is at the bottom front of your engine block with you reaching down while bent over the front of the vehicle.

At least one aftermarket manufacturer instructs to tie fishing line to the oil pump pick up tube retaining screw so that if you drop it into the pan you can retrieve it.  I spent about 8 hours trying to get that da@! screw in, and must have dropped it into the pan more than a dozen times.  The fishing line got in my way - fell off at least once - luckily was able to retrieve the screw with a magnet.  If it were my truck, I would definitely drop the oil pan, but I've got a 2-wheel drive truck.  With a 4x4, you need to drop the front diff in order to drop the oil pan.  If you want to do it, I guess we can - maybe your fingers are more slender and you have better dexterity than mine.  With your body lift (it is a body lift isn't it?) we'll be reaching down from above that much farther to get to the bottom of the pump.

The timing set in the LS-1 based engines is supposed to be pretty good.  My vote is to leave it in.

at 36.59 an hour for offtime mechanic work, sure lets go for it, I'll bill ya, no problem!

If you need ramps Greg I have a set that will support the AV, still wish you would consider the floor tranny jack, lol., the neurosurgeon told me last week the pinched nerve in my neck is not bad enough just yet to work on, (huh) lol.  Other than the ordinary tools (sockets etc) is there anything else you would need, don't forget to prespray the exhaust bolts with PB Blaster or the like.  I also have a three ton floor jack and a six ton hydraulic bottle jack if needed.

Me too please (but no Nav).  Pulling the camper, I'm probably 5 hours.  It looks like M1 is probably an hour or so from Indy.

I'm about 1.5 hours from Indy OBB, about 2 hours from Louisville Ski, although coming from say Nashville, I'd get off of I-69 at Bowling Green, KY.  I'm a bit under 3 hours from Bowling Green.   I'll send a PM shortly with the address.

More sockets will be very handy.  If you have a nice floor jack bring it along, as it may be nicer than mine.  I've got a pair of ramps sturdy enough for an AV, and I'm hoping the beast will be on them (in the rear) and non-driveable by the time we see you.

Additional lighting would be great.  I've got one flourescent trouble light, a few flashlights, and some spot lighting that gets too hot to get under the truck and in the neighborhood of flammable fluids.

I've got PB Blaster - good stuff.

What do you mean consider the floor tranny jack?  I thought I already indicated that I've got one?

In any event we'll do our best to get you in condition to change your neurosurgeon's mind!   :cheesy1:

3000-3200 stall.    :cheesy1:

A 3K floor jack.  Hmmmmm.  That's bit on the light side.  I think mine is 5K, and Didit said his was 3T, so I'd say leave it at home.

I could say something about you being deficient in the lighting department, but I'll let that opening slide.   :coolsmiley:

If you could use more lighting at your place, pick some up before you come!

MainOne I made a post earlier, but for some reason it did not post, if you wanna meet up at the Winery there on 37 before drop time (this Sat or Sun), lol.   I can bring  the jack and ramps, drive up on your set, jack up the rear and put the second set under rear wheels, SAFETY is most important, figure out a way to secure the AV so that there is no danger of rolling off when you drop the tranny, (strap  to wall, strap tires to ramps etc) we dropped one once but fortunately we were out drinkin beer and smokin, personally I still think my son leaned on the car  but he says NOT!

These are good ideas Didit.  When KY_Bob and I did my TC, we realized as we were bringing the truck down that we hadn't secured it very well, if at all.

I had thought that using ramps in the front would get in the way, but if I back up on them, it shouldn't be too bad.  If your ramps are like mine, they should have a lip at the end which should do a fair job of keeping the truck from rolling off the non-ramp end, and if when we jack up the rear and place the ramps the other way, with the lip against the tires, I think it should be pretty secure.

When shall we meet???

That's a dang good price on a tranny but it won't work for M1 as it's for a 4X4. The tailshaft is different but I guess it could be changed out if you had to.

We can hook you into the wireless router if that works.  Also got a fridge in the garage to help with your other duties!   :cheesy1:

I've been in email communication with someone who is thinking about making an appearance who hasn't yet weighed in on this thread, if he can work it out with the GF.  He knows his way around cams, transmissions and torque converters so he would be a great help!

I noticed a few weeks ago that my frame rails were showing rust.  Last year I applied a product called Rust Bullet to part of my grill guard, brackets for my side steps, and the factory hitch receiver and support, which were all showing a good deal of rusting.  I have been happy with how that has performed, and am planning on applying some to the frame while the truck is down during the tranny install.

The Rust Bullet product itself is silver/grey in color, and they sell a product call BlackShell which is black (obviously) and made to be applied over the top of the main Rust Bullet product.  These can easily be brushed on.  They also sell Rust Bullet Automotive which is thinner and made to be sprayed on, but since I don't have the spray equipment, and wasn't that interested in a real smooth finish where I was putting this stuff, went with the brush on product.

Once a can of these things is opened, it supposedly isn't good for long, so they sell in amounts from a 1/4 pint all the way up to 55 gal drums.  Last time I bought a 1/4 pint of both Rust Bullet and BlackShell which was supposed to be good for about 6 square feet.  The 1/4 pints go for $11 and $12 respectively.

This time with the amount of coverage I'm thinking about doing with the frame rails, I'm thinking I'll need 2 1/4 pints of each, which looks to be about $44 plus shipping.  If anyone coming is interested in trying this out, and wants more than just what's left over after I'm done, buying a pint of each product only totals $60 plus shipping.  If any of you are wanting to take care of some under body or near underbody rust, such as the stock hitch equipment which was rusting very badly on my truck, I can order the pints and you can cover the $16 difference, get a good deal, and we should have much more than enough (unless you want to paint your whole truck, LOL!).

Here's a link to the Rust Bullet web site for more info on their products.

After my tranny fiasco, I did a complete undercarriage degreaser and undercoating so I think I'm good.

OBB might want to participate.   :winkani:

From what I saw when I was under his truck at Bratfest he'll need a 55 gallon drum!
....
I'll have to check into this stuff real quick. You two are right. it's pretty damn ugly under my truck.

That's just wrong Joe!!!!
Not really. buck2

M1, do I need to go grinding the existing rust off before applying this stuff?

The link he posted indicates you don't have to do any surface prep.

I was reading that. I'd like his intake on it also as he's used it already. Wanted to know if he did anything extra before using it.

You'll want to get any loose stuff off, but I didn't do any grinding.  Pretty much just used a finger nail to get the peeling stuff off.  As described on the site, the intial coat seemed to soak into the existing surface rust, and the second coat seemed to seal it all.  I've been quite happy with it, although I noticed a "crack" in it on my hitch support which I intend to hit next week.  Considering how bad that was, I'm REALLY happy overall with how that seems to be protecting it.  I should also point out that I had not put the BlackShell product on that area - it was just the silver Rust Bullet.  Maybe the BlackShell would have prevented the one issue I've seen with this product on my truck.

If this stuff doesn't take long to apply then get enough for the both of us and I'll pay you when we're there or send the money beforehand. Looks like I'll be under mine next week with a putty knife and safety goggles.
I want to make sure it doesn't take away time from the serious projects though.

Sounds like a plan.  I'll order a pint, more than twice what I need, and the difference should be $16.  That should cover about 25 sq feet.  I don't need the money beforehand - will order tonight or tomorrow morning so it should be here by Wednesday next week.

I don't think we'll be drinking enough beer to keep you from working on your truck!   :cheesy1:

You've got me.  I'd call Ligenfelter and ask them.

I tried and all I got was voice mail.  Will follow up with them tomorrow.  Don't think it's anything to worry about, just curious.

Had to drive about 50 miles to a football game tonight and I can't get over the difference this new torque converter makes.  It actually feels like I put a new engine and tranny in her.  She always had power off the line, but now she holds the RPMs and just keeps going.  Can't wait on the cam!!  You FI folks must drive around just giggling!!!

The TC coupled with a cam giving more mid and high end power will likely get a giggle out of you!

Will be interested in your thoughts of the TC after you tow the camper up here next week.

I forgot that I got the tune on top of everything also.  I might need to give that a little credit too.  Very smooth shifts!  Nothing my Superchips ever did for me.

I've been a little concerned about the towing too.  With the TC, it really has made me change my driving style learning what it does.  I'm sure with the camper behind me it will be a learning experience also.  Plan to leave about noon on Tuesday and take it easy coming up. Have the coffee brewing around 8AM on Wednesday.  Wife and girls are going to drive up Thursday.

Cam is in Ski's truck.  He's tackling the 14th valve spring right now.  We might be able to have gotten this knocked out today if someone hadn't forgotten to buy the front seal in the timing cover.  We'll be able to get the springs knocked out and the rockers reinstalled (half of them already are), crank the engine over by hand to make sure we don't have any valve//piston clearance issues, and get the timing covers back on.  Tomorrow morning we'll get the seal, install the timing cover, crank pulley, water pump, radiator, connect hoses, electrical connectors, and take care of everything else....

Just made it back to the campground. Man, haven't ridden a bike that far in a long time!

Man, what a learning experience today putting in a cam and springs. M1 hooked me up!!  We made a pretty good team today. Button it up in the morning and off to do some tranny work. Woo Hoo.

Didit I know you've been here before, but no water at the site. This place is empty!  FYI-I brought plenty of kindling.

Hmmm.....30 minutes by car and you're telling us you rode a bike? As in bicycle?  I'm throwing the BS flag on this one.

Anyway. I have the Boss convinced that we're leaving at 7am. Counting a lunch stop and traffic, we should roll in there about 2pm. I'll send you a text when we stop for lunch. :wavey:

Thanks to all who came to help out/get some mods done.  Here's what we accomplished:

Cam, valve springs and pushrods in Ski Edition's AV
Transmission swap in my AV
Spark plugs in Didit's AV
Changed solenoid for train horn in Didit's AV
2nd bed light and switch for bed lights installed in Ski's AV
Coat of rust bullet on bottom of my AV
Did some baseline performance runs on Ski's, Didit's and my  AVs.  Did some post cam runs on Ski's truck.  Looked like the cam helped him pick up about 25 hp and nearly 8 ft-lbs per my G-Tech.  Will do some more analysis and post more details later.  I've done some post transmission and torque converter data collecting but haven't done any G-Tech post mod tests to see what the change did to my acceleration times.

Unfortunately I spilled most of the rust bullet, and we didn't get any on OBB's truck, although he did get some experience putting it on my truck.  Looks like I will need more for a second coat.

It was a tiring but enjoyable experience.  The weather was perfect.  It would have been more work just doing the transmission by myself, and working together we got a lot more done, and had a good time.

We're home. Unpacked and I have gotten a shower already. I still can't get that little bit of Rust Bullet off of me. Main One, I don't envy you trying to get that much off of you. Pix of that later :evil5:

We did get a fair amount of time consuming work done. I missed out on the cam swap as We got there just about 2pm Thursday and they had it done already.

I really need to toss out a big Thank You to Ski Edition and family for letting us bunk with them in their camper. That was a a big factor in whether we could have made the trip or not. :yourock:

Main One and Minor One also have some big Thanks coming as well. You two were great host and hostess for this shindig and I'm still at a loss of words on how to thank Minor One for all the planning and executing of the meals. That's something that totally took us by surprise. It really was a great time and We are so glad that We could make it over for this.

Didit and Lu also need some big hugs their way for Didit's help and entertainment. Lu's dessert was great also. Can't wait for that recipe to get here. :wavey:

Always hate to part ways from such good friends that we don't get to see that often but it's part of living so far apart and yet the common bond of the Avy that brings us all together.

I've got pix to upload after I resize them so I hope I can get that done here within the next few hours.

We're home and have the camper unloaded and washed on the outside.  Taking a break before I clean the inside.

What a GREAT GTG!!!

Words can't properly do justice to the hospitality that Main One, Minor One and family showed me the last 5 days.  I went up there under the pretense of seeing some old friends and doing some mods, but came back with a HUGE appreciation for the generosity that was shown.  When the person coined the phrase "The Hostess with the Mostest", they had Minor One in mind.  What a wonderful family and give that baby a big kiss from Uncle Brian.

I learned so much from Main One and truly appreciate the help and guidance that he provided me on my mods this past week.  What a display of patience and knowledge on your part.  Thanks again!!  It may not have a "Hot Rod", but it does exactly what I want it to do (for now   )!

OBB and Debi -- What a great time we had!  My girls were very upset they didn't get to tell you good bye!!  We had a wonderful time having you stay with us in the camper.  You are more than welcome any time!!  What great friends you're become!!   :yourock:

Those were some big-ass marshmallows!!!!    :cheesy1:

Didit, Lu and Molly --  You folks are the best!!  This is the 2nd time we've been camping neighbors and can't wait to do it again in a couple of weeks.  Can't wait on my recipe!!  Thanks for all your help on the light and every thing else!!  Happy Birthday Friend and see you soon!!

To the mods!!  The cam gives me exactly what I was looking for!  Married up with the new Torque Converter, I'm strong off the line and it holds the power now where it dropped off before.   The best thing is that it had no detrimental affect on my towing ability.  Actually, I feel I'm much stronger towing.  The bed light is a great mod!  I think OBB is going to do a write up on is when he gets a chance.  It was exactly what my AV needed!!

Thanks again to everyone!!!!!  I'll remember this one for a long time!!   I'm exhausted!!!!!!

Yeah, I'm still picking the stuff off of me.  I came off of my face pretty easily, but everywhere else is a different story.  I've still got over 60% of it on me.

I put on what was remaining in the can this evening - needed about 50% more than what I had to do a second coat.  (Needless to say I wore disposable gloves this time, LOL!)  There were some spots that I saw that we hadn't gotten, so I'm thinking 3 coats, at least on some of it.  I got a second coat on the outside of the framerails under the doors, which is pretty visible without getting under the truck.  I may put on the first coat of the Blackshell there tomorrow to cover up the spotty silver.

Didit, I'll get the other computer going in a bit and post your times compared to some of the others I've recorded.  That first one we did was fantastic.  Too bad you couldn't back it up!

A few pix. I created a sub category in the gallery for any more pix that people would like to upload

Ole Yeller up on the ramps getting ready for the tranny swap

the driveshaft

Ski Edition and M1 underneath. I think I was playing tool wench at the time.

SE was turning the crank so M1 could get the torque converter bolts out.

Break time

SE, M1 and Didit. Didit just got a new ride. :cheesy1:

On the way to M1's on Sat morning I snapped this pix of Didit in my mirror.

Didit changing out the solenoid for his train horns

The spots on M1's frame he wanted to touch up

Cutting a hole in SE's truck for the cargo light switch.

SE under the watchful eye of Didit doing some splicing

The installed switch

2 shots, one with flash, on without.
Notice the two lights. Not stock on the the late 03's and up

No flash on this one. Having that second light is nice.

Main One after painting the rust bullet all over the place.  :cheesy1:

SE and M1's granddaughter. What a little cutie pie she is. And "Uncle" Brian didn't do any spoiling of her either.

Great pics OBB!

Didit, here's your average (for your 2 runs) 0-60, 1/8, 1/4, HP & TQ numbers, in that order

8.04, 10.47@71.1, 16.05@87.7, 256.1, 295.7

I think those numbers are great considering it was in the mid 60s and you had me with you.

Here are SE's before numbers, temps in the 40s, me with him:

8.39, 10.53@68.3, 16.46@82.0, 206.8, 226.8

Here's SE's best after number.  I'm using the best because I'm sure his ECM was still learning for both the cam and the fact that we'd had his battery disconnected for a couple of days.  Temp in the 50s I believe, me with him.

8.07, 10.47@70.8, 16.14@85.4, 247.7, 261.8.  The torque increase was more than I recalled.

Here's my before numbers, although I believe my HP and TQ (especially HP) numbers read low due to the RPM calibration on the G-tech being almost 1000 rpm off at shift.  I was alone in the AV, temp in the 50s.

7.09, 9.96@72.8, 15.38@91.7, 263.3, 297.0

I was really surprised at Didit's numbers.  His AV is strong, and I don't recall him doing to much to it to add power other than an air (dry filter) intake.

18x10 Forged Weld Wheels, BFG g-Force KDWs, JBA shorties, custom catback with FM70, Crane plug wires, Trailblazer Torque Converter, bigger cam, efans, HP Tuners custom tune, WAAG stuff, mildly boosted with Vortech Supercharger.......

I bet it's got nothing to do with the tires you've got on it.  ::popcorn::

Tires and gears may be the excuse. I can feel it in the seat of the pants. Satisfied for now, but will see what Black Bear can do with the Cable tune and go from there.

One thing I hope this GTG and other ones that we have had shows ALL members---if you have an opportunity to go to a GTG, go and I can almost guarantee you will meet some GREAT people and learn something new about your AV.  I'm not the most active member by far, but the GTGs I have attended were all very rememerable!!  It's got to where my wife enjoys them as much as I do!  Scary huh??   :goodstuff:

Didit,

Looking at the HPTuners scanner data during your run, I see where the computer is seeing a 10 degree hotter intake air temp at the MAF, so you were probably getting in less dense air during the second run.  To compound that, I also see where the computer took 1.5 degrees out of your spark advance.

Your air temps peaked during second gear under WOT in both runs, and then started coming back down as the vehicle speed went up.  Ambient if I recall from your mirror was 66 degrees.  Your IATs had peaked at 77 degrees prior to your first run, and then peaked at 81 degrees during that run.  They peaked at 91 degrees during your second run.

I also noticed you getting a lot of knock retard while in second and third gear, and under WOT your long term fuel trims were at 9.4.  The fuel trims being that off, and in that direction, indicate the engine is likely getting more airflow than it is calculating, and with the spark advance curves the way they are, with more advance with less air flow, your MAF calibration is likely driving your advance a bit too high, even for both runs.  Your truck performed very well though, even though you were getting 5 degrees of knock retard.

thanks for the added info, very much appreciated Greg, we'll have to do it again sometime when I dont have 500 pounds of gear in the back, lol.   Also, I will say it seemed to pull the camper better with the new plugs, very rarely do I go 70 with the camper, but on the way back I pretty much maintained 70 except going up hill and instead of letting cruise waste gas getting it back there, I just kinda coasted it out till it could do it again without downshifting and going into gas wasting passing mode, lol.

For OBB and Didit who took a look under the truck while I was messing with the transmission linkage, I figured out yesterday why I was having so much difficulty getting the thing to work right.

Yesterday as I was straightening up the garage, I noticed that I had an extra linkage bracket in my "junk drawer".  I decided to see if it was keyed differently because the way I had the other one on I wasn't getting a good angle on the linkage in 1st gear, and didn't seem to have enough adjustment to the cable for any of the gears.  I seemed to be about an inch off.

I took the linkage off, noting about where the cable end was, and put the other one in place, and saw it was pretty much identical.  When I took it off, I thought, what if I flip it around?  Sure enough, when I flipped it around, the cable attachment point was about an inch farther forward, and I then had a good angle for first gear.

I'll post the pics I took later.  Intuitively, it looks like the linkage shouldn't be attached the way it needs to be, because that brings the boot around the cable very close to the tranny pan flange.

Personally I did not get up that far, even though I did ask if maybe the bracket was on backwards.
If you think about it though, with the boot being close to the pan flange, should not ever be a problem since the bracket is bolted to the tranny making it one, if the tranny rocks under extreme pressure the cables are going to go the same way with it.

OhioBellboy,

I'm so sorry that I'm just now reading the wonderful words of praise you sent.  If Greg hasn't told you, with the garage being so clean (or at least it was) I decided to start cleaning out the attic.  We have stuff up there we haven't looked at in 10 years so we made a plan to bring down 7 boxes at a time, look through them and keep going until the entire attic was done.  The FIRST box I picked up had carpenter ants under it.  I SCREAMED!!!  So I've been dealing with the little buggers ever since.  Back to the fun stuff, you guys were the perfect guests.  It was an absolute pleasure having you all in.  I truly loved meeting both you and your wife and you two are just wonderful.  I look very, very forward to the next time we have the chance to get together.  And I promise to get you some soup.  I can't say when but you are on my to-do list.

Brian,

Again sorry to be so late in replying.  As I told OhioBellboy the day after you all left we found carpenter ants.  We unloaded approximately 150 boxes out of our attic so we could treat for the little buggers.  Wholy cow it was exhausting.  We still don't have everything put back yet, it's amazing the amount of stuff we have recycled.

I was very nervous expecting all of you hoping things would go smoothly and I was completely blown away.  I loved that you all came in and made yourself at home.  No bigger compliment could be made.  I still blame Main One for his lack of communication skills.  I'll work on that.

I am DEFINATELY coming to Nashville one of these days.  But will you let us in if we don't have Cali?  She really misses all of the love shown to her.  I think I heard her say "Where's my Uncle Brian?" the other day.

Hate to hear about your ant infestation.  They have been bad down here also this year.  Once again, we enjoyed your hospitality and hopefully I didn't eat too much!!  The 4 pound meatloaf was just a slice of heaven (and the sandwiches the nexr 2 days).   :winkani:

All you folks are more than welcome to come to Nashville and stay at our house.  I guess you can come, even though Cali doesn't make the trip.  She sure is a punkin!!

Come see us soon!!

Brian
