Serious Modding GTG 6-10 Oct
« on: September 14, 2010, 04:25:49 PM »
Well, I've got a transmission sitting in the garage waiting to go in, and a torque converter on the way, and Ski Edition has a torque converter and a cam he's wanting to install, so we're planning a gtg to help each other out and hopefully recruit some of you to hand us tools, turn some wrenches, skin some knuckles, and probably drink a beer or two.  I had been planning on taking vacation the week of 4 Oct, then Ski started PM'ing about coming up here for some help, the very day I wrapped up my tranny rebuild.  (How convenient!   :evil5:)

He's bringing up his camper and planning on staying at a State Park about a half hour away, and Didit is interested in bringing down his camper, or so Ski is telling me.     We know from some of Didit's posts earlier this year that he can tackle a y-pipe remove and replace, so I know he can do something to help out with the transmission removals.  I've pulled out my tranny twice - the last time basically by myself, and have swapped my cam, as well as helped KY_Bob swap his, so I know how to get this done, and roughly about how long it will take.

The plan, which I am sure will evolve some as we get closer, is to plan on close to a week, but then possibly do some shortening of the time span depending upon how much help we can attract.

This will be at my house, and as I'm doing this on a hotel computer which gave me a 3 minute warning about 30 seconds ago I'm going to wrap this up for now so that I don't loose this entire post!    banghead1

Edit -

I've got a 2.5 car garage fill with a bunch of stuff, but will clear out enough to get one truck in the garage.  If the weather is good, we could do a cam install outside, but due primarily to the slope of the driveway, would prefer to not do the tranny work outside.  If we do work on two at a time, a few extra tools would be helpful, such as socket sets and screwdrivers.  I have all the tools needed to the work we'll be doing, but we might want more than one 10mm socket at once for instance.

From Ski's other thread, it looks like we've got:

As you know swappin the tranny is the easiest, lol.,   drop the drive shaft, loosen the bolt on the tranny mount, put jack in place, remove bolts on bell housing, remove cooler lines and electrical, slightly lift, remove cross member, slide tranny out, If I remember correctly, lol.   I'm gettin old and its been a long time,  the 10th is my birthday, I'll have to check and see if I have a party to attend, lol.

I will have my Torque converter installed this weekend, so we can scratch that one off the list.  I figure we can do rock, paper, scissors to see what we do first (possibly pre-weekend) and what we will actually have left.  The program will evolve.  For you folks wanting to come, I will have space for a few folks in my camper on a FCFS basis.  Let me know!!!  I figure that I will take care of buying the meat on Saturday night if we want to do a cookout (it's the least I can do).

Mike, my birthday is the 5th and I owe you a 6 pack already!!

You doin it yourself, really not much to it, just patience, and if I remember right JUICE IT BEFORE YOU PUT IT ON< LOL  my god its been twenty years since I've done any tranny work ,lol.    Looks pretty straight forward on the  AV though, just make sure you get the keyway slot lined up (if they still use them) and push it all the way up, tighten it up, not sure what the torque spec is though, your paper work should tell you that though,    and if I rember right the first two swaps I did by muscle and said I would never do another one again without using a tranny jack, what a releif they are.

My mechanic (bad back) is down, but he is going to lend his expertise/supervision while his son and I get it done (with a tranny jack).  I'm too old to be bench pressing transmissions.

Glad you're getting it done, shouldn't be too hard with experienced mechanic nearby.

let me see how my schedule plays out at work. We just submitted new tour selections for the next 6 weeks. I may take a few days vacation and head over. I don't have my daughter that week so that's a good start. If someone can guarantee good weather, I'll ride the bike over. I'm gonna take for granted this is a guy's only event.

WHERE IT REALLY IS ABOUT THE FRIENDS AND AVY'S, AND NOT THE ALMIGHTY ADVERTISING DOLLAR!

Can't guarantee the weather.  No, I don't think it's a guy's only event.  My wife may drive up for the weekend and hang out.  If you want to bring you're better half, I have room for you 2!!  May be a little rowdy in the campground, especially if Lu and Didit are next door!!

This sounds like it could be a lot of fun but I'll have to see how I am feeling after surgery.  I'm restricted from driving for two weeks after surgery and I have a post surgery follow up appt on Friday, 10/8 but I'll see how I'm doing.  This is a GTG that I would truly love to attend even if I can't do that much.  I don't know if I like the title of beer/tool wench, I would much rather be hands on for this one!!
